Rickshaw Dumplings and Bistro Truck are on Hudson, Calexico has shredded beef brisket on Prince and Gorilla Cheese has a "brunch for lunch" melt on Water, where Mexicue is also parked.

PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Jodie”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Jodie who likes to eat like it’s Thanksgiving more than once a year, and would like to not have to travel to Brooklyn for a good sandwich.

Name: Jodie

Occupation: Law student

 Where you live: Financial District

 Age: 23

 Favorite kinds of food: Bacon cheeseburgers, Italian, Mexican, frou frou cheese and prosciutto platters.

 Least favorite foods: Chinese food (although I do get cravings for it about 3x a year), okra.

 Favorite lunches downtown : I’m a major fan of Burger Burger and often order the Mr. Flintstone Burger there.  It’s topped with truffled mushrooms and roquefort cheese, and the $12 special comes with a side of Cajun fries and a can of soda. By the way, the burgers there are quite big and come served on a brioche bun — the light sweetness of the bun combined with the rich, tangy roquefort cheese… my goodness I have to stop thinking about it before I impulsively order it; Another burger I enjoy is the bacon cheeseburger from Stir Cafe on Broadway (btw. Whitehall & Exchange Pl.).  Despite its terrible reviews on Yelp and Seamless, the people there make a tasty burger and deliver it in this unforgettable cardboard food container with fries, a pickle and cole slaw.  The burger combo is substantial and comes out to around $8; not enough people know about the great deal; When I’m missing Thanksgiving (“missing,” as in lamenting the too few appearances it makes in my life), I go to Lenny’s on John St. (at Cliff) and order the platter of one meat and three sides.  Oven roasted turkey, mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese and stuffing, and you’ve got yourself a $10 mini-Thanksgiving; I also love to get the falafel over rice platter at Alan’s Falafel cart on Broadway (at Liberty), and the people there give you a huge helping for the price —  $5 for pure, satiating goodness.

Columbia Has Stolen Our Food Trucks: OK, stolen is a strong word, but some of our regulars are parked at the university's new food truck pod. We do have Sweetery, Crisp and Schnitzel & Things on Hudson, Comme Ci Comme Ca at Old Slip and Bian Dang on Front, according to the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker. Also, Wall St. Burgers is on Varick with a sweet onion chicken burger, and La Cense is on Wall.

First Look: You Might Have To Break The $10 Barrier At OBAO

Several months after paper went up on the windows in the former space selling “exquisite jewelry”, OBAO opened last week selling a mix of Vietnamese and Thai dishes that they mercifully didn’t fuse together. There’s a steam table with Thai standards and most of the Vietnamese fare is out of the ML price range. The prices are a bit high for a place that looks like a bit more downscale, but if you’re willing to toe the $10 line you’re probably going to be pretty satisfied with your lunch here.

Papa Perrone Truck Opening Brick & Mortar

If you were on Twitter yesterday you may have spotted the sort of vague post above from the Papa Perrone truck about opening a brick and mortar on Water St. Well, Papa Perrone himself confirmed in an e-mail that this is happening in a couple of months when they open at 36 Water St. (nr. Coenties Slip). There were a bunch of empty storefronts on that stretch of street, one of which was just filled by OBAO Noodles & BBQ, and it sounds like the Papa Perrone collaboration is working on a design at the moment. Word is they’re also thinking of putting the Rutgers grease truck special on the menu, but nothing’s nailed down at the moment.
