Your First Look at Nelly Spillane’s

_MG_3629 - Version 2

Irish eyes have been smiling on 33rd Street. Just a month or so after Hickey’s closed it’s doors, Nelly Spillane’s opened for business two blocks east. The new pub has been open for about a month now in the space that long ago was Latin spot Caridad. I stopped in last week to grab lunch and see what it’s all about.

Times Restaurant Is Now a Mexican Hooters?

The downstairs Times Restaurant (8th Ave btw. 39+40) has endured near constant change over the last few years: name changes, wildly fluctuating buffet prices, DOH imposed downtime. Through all of that, Times has been some kind of Indian restaurant, much like the upstairs Kashmir Grill it used to share a name with. But now Times Restaurant is offering “traditional Mexican and Tex-Mex food.” It looks like it’s still a sit-down place, but there are a few ML friendly lunch items, like tacos and sandwiches. Perhaps more exciting is the fact that it may also be some sort of Mexican Hooters…

Tenka Launches 10 Truck Blockbuster Giveaway

If you don’t mind giving up your cell phone number, Tenka has offered some pretty great food truck freebies through their service.   But nothing like this!  Today they launched what they’re calling the “First Annual Virtual Food Truck Festival” featuring 10 simultaneous freebies, from 10 great food trucks- most of whom park in Midtown at least one day a week.  Unlike most deal sites, this isn’t a discount… it’s straight up free food. The catch is only the first 100 people who bring the coupon to each food truck score the freebie, so you’ve got to be quick.  Check out all ten freebies here>>

Bi Lokma: Sip Sak’s New Fast Casual Concept

Bi Lokma

Turkish food is a mystery to me. I know my Chinese food, I know my Japanese food, I know my Italian food but if you ask me what sort of food they serve in Turkish restaurants, I would draw a blank (or I would just check the internet). So to change that I decided to go eat at a Turkish restaurant.

The (apparently very opinionated) Chef and owner of Sip Sak, Orhan Yegen, recently opened a new spot called Bi Lokma (on 45th btw 2+3rd). It’s a tiny Turkish restaurant with a very ambitious menu for a where all the food seems to be made in advance. There are soups, salads, desserts, over a dozen appetizers and over a dozen main courses. And the best part about the menu is that almost everything on it is under $10 with the exception of 3 items.

Tri Tip Grill Adds Toasty to the Permanent Menu

midtown toasty

Two weeks ago, I issued a challenge to Tri Tip to out toasty Dunkin Donuts’ new Big ‘N’ Tasty , and they hit back with the Midtown Toasty— 3 strips of bacon, a fried egg, melted cheese on 2 toasted pieces of challah bread for $3.99 . Tri Tip owners promised if they sold 100 of these sandwiches they’d add it to the menu. Despite Ash Wednesday and a Lenten Friday potentially driving down demand for this sandwich, the Midtown Toasty prevailed and according to the cashier I spoke with, it is now a permanent part of the menu. Seeing as I lay down the gauntlet on this one, I hit up Tri Tip to see how the Midtown Toasty stacks up. Read more »

Schnitzel & Things Will Probably Not Open Today: On Friday we gave you a sneak peek inside the new Schnitzel & Things storefront (on 3rd Ave. btw. 45+46th), which was maybe possibly going to have its soft opening over the weekend.  Well, they didn't end up opening over the weekend and it looks like they might delay their grand opening until tomorrow. We'll let you know as soon as we find out anything (or you can follow them on Twitter.)
