K Food Pizza adds $5.50 Latin Buffet

As much as I love a cheap meal, I haven’t really been able to get behind the 99 cent pizza trend, which is why back in February, it was Brownie who hopped the subway to try the dollar slice at K Food Pizza (on 33rd btw. Mad+5th) even though I work a block away. This pizza joint, located on the site of the old Golden Krust, has been churning out dollar slices ever since and it hasn’t once tempted me to walk in the doors. That is, until I saw the sign advertising a Latin Food Buffet for $5.50!

For the price and the place, my expectations weren’t particularly high, so it wasn’t so surprising that the buffet wasn’t all you can eat. It’s a steam table behind glass and you select which of the four options you would like. For $5.50, you get one choice of meat and a side of rice and beans.

There are about four meat options which include fried fish filets, beefsteak in sauce, chicken with sauteed vegetables and roasted chicken leg/thigh quarters, below.

Outside of wishing they had provided some hot sauce, the chicken was perfectly acceptable. Not earth-shattering, but not significantly worse than Tina’s down the block and for a couple bucks less, it makes a good alternative if your standards aren’t too high.

“Thin and Crust Pizza” sounds oddly delicious

  • I guess I will hit this again. I kind of got sick of their pizza. Can’t hurt to try their “latin faire” though…

  • I find this place somewhat depressing, but that doesn’t mean I won’t try the new food.

  • I agree. When I first saw it, I was psyched for cheap pizza close to work and home, but having been there several times, I eventually got turned off. I think “depressing” is a great way to describe it. I’m almost too depressed to go back LOL

I thought the definition of a buffet was all-you-can-eat (or, as I always find hysterical, the “all-you-CARE-to-eat).

    • buffet(1) n. 1. A large sideboard with drawers and cupboards. 2. a. A
counter from which meals or refreshments are served. b. A restaurant having
such a counter. 3. A meal at which guests serve themselves from various
dishes displayed on a table or sideboard. [Fr.]

Did you ever actually look at the definition? :)

      • Buffet automatically gets MLers thinking ALL-YOU-CAN-EAT it seems. Blame Zach for that. HAHA.

The latin food seems alright and could be worth considering with the price.

I’m closer to a Sophie’s though and still need to try Margon.

  • lmao @ Rice Been Meat.

  • Eating the chicken thigh/leg platter right now (as pictured above). Rice is a little gummy; chicken slightly dry, but not unpleasant. As is always the case in these places, the beans to rice ratio is off, too much rice being the usual condition. It’s a decent amount of food for $5.50, though for $5 it would be a better deal. That said, I’d being willing to add this place to the usual rotation.

Yes, it’s still as depressing as ever.
