I’m a Psuedo Tool: From our Happy Hour correspondent Mamacita: "So I'm reading Details mag and they have 63 signs you may be a pretentious tool. #27 You're a facebook fan of a food cart or truck. #44 You photograph your food." Nice. Just don't call me foodiot.

Lunch’er Steve Reports: Woorijip’s Spicy Pork Belly

pork-belly

Lunch’er Steve sends word that Woorijip (the awesome Korean fast food joint on 32nd btw. B’way+5th) has added a new item to their repertoire: “Stopped in for my weekly visit to Woo Ri Jip and found Spicy Pork Belly in the back cooler and had to get it. 5 good sized slices for $3. As expected for that price, not high quality. I ate it cold and it was tough, but the spicy sauce made it tasty. Apologies for the cell phone pic quality.” I think I speak for everyone when I say no apology necessary! Thanks for the tip…

Taxi Gourmet Hits Up Kwik Meal: When I stopped by Kwik Meal last week for a pre-Vendy lunch, I was actually joined by Layne the "Taxi Gourmet" (the blogger who hails cabs and asks them to take her to their favorite restaurants.)  See what she had to say about her very first lamb over rice platter.

Jamaican Dutchy’s Stew Peas Is One of the Best Things I’ve Ever Eaten From A Cart

Photo courtesy of Chez Pim via Twitter

I remember the first time the Jamaican Dutchy’s stew peas entered my radar screen. They’ve been serving it as a Thursday special forever, but it never quite clicked that this was a must try dish until a few months ago. I emailed a former co-worker of mine, who is Jamaican, to ask if she would go with me to Jerk Pan, the newish Jamaican cart on Park Ave. and 48th Street. Her reply:

“Any day but Thursday — it’s Jamaican Dutchy’s ‘stew peas’ special day, LOL”

Really? So this day is blocked off permanently in your calendar. That’s crazy. Maybe it’s about time I tried these “stewed peas”.

NYC Cravings Truck Now Selling Zongzi

DSC04550

It appears as if the NYC Cravings truck is determined to bring Chinatown to Midtown bit by bit.  The latest addition to their Taiwanese menu is zongzi, a Chinese tamale-like snack featuring gluttinous rice stuffed in bamboo leaves and studded with all sorts of goodies.  Their version features peanuts, pork, chinese sausage, egg yolk, sichuan vegetable, Chinese mushroom and dried shrimp.

Thursday is Peking Duck Pancake Day at Yushi

Yushi, Midtown NYCIt’s been awhile since we heard from Yushi, the slightly too expensive, slightly too hipster, but creative and tasty sushi and bento place on 47th btw. Lex+Park (the one with the refrigerated conveyor belt.) Clearly they’ve just been biding their time in anticipation of dropping this bombshell… Starting today Yushi will have Peking duck pancakes as a Thursday special (three, plus fried rice for $8.95.)  I hear they did this at their downtown location, and it was crazy successful (have any of our downtown lunchers tried these?) Plus I liked their peking duck sushi rolls.  Could be good.

I hate posting glossy, done up PR photos, but in this case I think it’s helpful just so you can have realistic expectations.  Check it out after the jump…

Fight Breaks Out Over Whether Dallas BBQ is Serious Eats

Serious Eats’ Ed Levine devoted his weekly New York review to Dallas BBQ today (there is one in Midtown on 42nd btw. 7+8th), and the Feedbag’s Josh Ozersky came down on him, saying that restaurants like this are an “affront to the city”. As much as it pains me to say this, I tend to agree with Mr. Cutlets on this one- but admit to always being curious about the Dallas BBQ $9.95 2 chicken take out special I used to see advertised in the subway. (Do they even have that deal anymore?) [via Grub Street]

Is BZ Grill Coming to Manhattan?

DSC04484Last week I lamented that one has to travel all the way to Astoria for some (delicious) bZ Grill action. This week Lunch’er Marie has some possibly amazing news in the comments: “My ‘rents went into bZ over the weekend after I showed them this post and the owner said he’s looking into bringing bZ Grill into the city because the rent prices have come down so much. Looks like Zach might get his midtown wish.”  I shudder (with joy) to think…
