Christmas Village Gives Me a Big Doner

If you live or work in Center City, you are well aware that Christmas Village is back. Besides 70 merchants to take care of holiday shopping, there are several German food vendors. Though it is temporary, it worth using while it lasts to break up your regular lunch routine. Last year, I tried an impressive percentage of the food items available at the Village; the melted to order raclette cheese on top of a potato pancake (not available this year), goulash, currywurst, a pork schnitzel sandwich, and a bacon waffle with nutella and speculoos.  This year, I wanted to try the item I skipped last year, the doner kebab sandwich.

The  Berlin style doner meat is sliced off the rotisserie and served in a sesame seed flatbread, that I actually preferred over pita. I also really enjoyed the well-seasoned meat, and while the cabbage and chopped cucumber and tomato were nice, I could have used more of the meat. Still, it is a big sandwich that will not leave you unsatisfied.

Whether you go with the doner or another German specialty, lunch at Christmas Village is something to take advantage of while it is around.

  • That is a very impressive doner – I’d post pictures too, if I had one like that.

I think we all know what part of the review Wayne will quote.

  • Wayne is showing admirable restraint by simply not jumping on this one the instant it was posted

  • While I certainly like the intent, the use of Doner in the lede is a bit off, no long O sound

    I would have went with

“Santa’s Down to Seven: I Just Ate Doner”

  • You could have gone with something about the Donner party as well

  • A jew eating a turkish specialty from Berlin in Christmas Village in Philadelphia … I hope you did a Festivus Pole Dance before you opened your Kwanzaa presents
