A South Philly Cubano at T & N Homemade Kitchen

You can’t get much more South Philly than T & N Homemade Kitchen , a tiny, 2 table and a counter jawn at Cleveland and Moyamensing. Around since 1980,  they serve a whole lot of crazy, Philly style creations. If you find comfort in being lovingly called “hun” in a South Philly accent, pull up a seat at the T & N counter.

They make their own buffalo chicken rolls, 2 for $5. Dipped in ranch, these crispy, egg roll style bites are a nice snack and would be a great bar snack.

A small bowl of straciatella soup, on the other hand, on the other hand was more Nonna’s kitchen than bar appropriate, though a bit under-seasoned.

We had to try the “Cubano Paesano;” a great idea, and South Philly Italian style cuban sandwich with roast pork, with homemade pork gravy, prosciutto, provolone, and pickles pressed into a panini ($8.50). This was a pretty fun sandwich, with some nice flavors, though maybe more gravy would have boosted it up a bit.

I also tried a fried meatball sandwich with spinach and prov ($8.50). The meatballs were a tad dry and the sandwich needed a sauce. I bet the meatball parm fares better.

T & N isn’t the best sandwich spot in town, but I enjoy their creative combos and South Philly essence enough to recommend a trip down there.

P.S. If I failed to mention the Frankie Five Stents sandwich, I’d be a terrible friend. This $15 monster features an 8 oz. Angus burger topped with fried Panko battered onion rings, fried bacon, pickles, cherry peppers, tomatoes, fried beer battered mozzarella wedges, INSIDE a fried battered Italian hoagie.

I am sorry I didn’t order this to show you, but I just didn’t feel like have a heart attack this week. Maybe next week. Or better yet, YOU try it.
