Grilled Cheese and Beyond from Cheese E. Wagon

Today Luncher John is checking out another food truck for us

Parked on the south side of Market Street between 33rd and 34th Street in front of Drexel’s law school is Cheese E. Wagon, a new food truck that opened last Fall. The name may evoke a truck simply focusing on grilled cheese or mac and cheese. Sure, grilled cheese is on the menu, but Cheese E. Wagon features plenty of cheesy goodness throughout its offerings.

Cheese E. Wagon’s menu is quite varied. Along with grilled cheese and burgers, there are quesadillas, barbecue sandwiches, and soups among the standard menu items and rotating specials. Most, though not all, selections feature some type of cheese, with a few items for those who do not like or cannot eat cheese. Owner Mike Sullivan, who was the former executive chef for Penn’s dining services, takes care to use fresh ingredients and prepare all the food to order. Breads, cheeses, and meats are not run-of-the-mill. Despite the commitment to high quality, Cheese E. Wagon keeps all items fairly priced between $4 and $7.

I first tried the Slow Roasted Pulled Pork and Muenster sandwich ($6.50). Mike mentioned that this rotating special was his favorite, and he had been having it every day. This endorsement was spot on. The bread was sizable, and the sandwich is thick, so you don’t get cheated on portion size. And the taste was tremendous. The pulled pork was wonderfully tender, and the barbecue sauce drizzle was sweet and memorable. Muenster cheese was well melted with the pork. I would have this sandwich again and again.

The Southwestern Chicken Quesadilla ($6.50) is the proclaimed No. 1 seller. It’s a large tortilla filled with grilled chicken, pico de gallo, blended cheeses, roasted red pepper, and coulis sauce. This meal did not disappoint either. The tortilla is well seasoned and retains a terrific charred taste. The cheeses are melted and incorporated into the rest of the ingredients, and the result is one excellent meal. It’s easy to see why the quesadilla is a crowd pleaser.

Cheese E. Wagon is a great addition to the Drexel food truck scene. Check it out for well-prepared, reasonably-priced cheesy dishes.
