Good sandwich list, though it would have been nice to see some more out of the way type places, or at least a few more spots up here north of Center City. Dalessandro’s for the best cheesesteak in the city would qualify, I’d think. Porky’s Point for their Puerto Rican pork over there on 5th. Of course, I suppose those places aren’t necessarily ‘iconic’… but they could be with some help!
I’ve been meaning to get to Shank’s and Famous 4th Street forever now. Need to have my first Schmitter this year, too.
Finally hit Sarcone’s a few weeks ago, when one of my sisters and brother-in-law were down from North Jersey. They thought I was crazy for taking them all the way down there from my place for a hoagie (“what do they make it with, gold flakes? You can get a sandwich right there down the corner!”), but I had the last laugh. You’d think they’d know by now to always trust my food instincts. ;)
Funny thing about DiNic’s is that even though I admire (sounds like the right word?) their roast pork, I wouldn’t go out of my way for it (John’s, on the other hand, I would, and have done, more than once!). Their Italian pulled pork and their meatball sandwich, on the other hand… two perfect sandwiches, imo. Need to try their brisket next month sometime.
Still love George’s, and always have. TNT (tongue and tripe, onions and long hots) ftw!
Shame on me for never having heard of Stogie Joe’s until now. I have no excuse. Now excuse me while I go hang my head for a few months…
