Stogie Joe’s Staples

A recently did a little delivery from South Philly’s Stogie Joe’s. It was a while ago, but I remembered enjoy a sample meatball at the Swedish Museum meatball competition.  I had also heard their pizza was something special. So I got a little piggish and ordered both, all for myself.

The “small” square pizza ($9) is actually pretty big. I kept half the pizza regular, topped with red sauce and the other half white, tomato, and basil ($1). It was quite lovely to look at and it was nice having the two different halves. The white was garlicky and the tomato slices were generously applied on top. Though this was not the classic NY style slice where the cheese and sauce are mixed, the red was impressively ungreasy and satisfyingly simple.

The meatball sandwich was $7 with 50 cents extra for a generous serving of melted cheese (I did mozz). Now, this is a meatball sandwich, not a sub, so it comes on a kaiser roll and isn’t huge. The taste was classic; fresh and simple tomato sauce and sliced meatballs that were moist and neither dense nor very fluffy.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  • Classic meatball sandwiches
  • Flavorful square pizza

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • Sandwiches are not huge (no leftovers)
