Taste of Philly 2012 Recap

Last night I attended the Phila Weekly Taste of Philly event.  It seems like there were a few less participants and more attendees this year so the lines were longer and the alcohol ran out before it was over, but the DJ was awesome and I left full and introduced to a few new places around the city.

Chutney Company’s Kathi Roll

A while back I enjoyed the uttapa’s at Philadelphia Chutney Co but wasn’t so enthralled that I made many return trips. While walking by the place I saw a sign for kathi rolls, which I didn’t remember them having when I ate there originally (though apparently they did as Chef’s special at the corner of the blackboard menu). Kathi rolls are a rolled up wrap; an Indian street food. Not to be confused with dosas, which have a thinner bread and are less tightly wrapped up. I absolutely loved them in NYC and having not had one since living there, I stopped in.

The Real Deal Italian Lunch at Mr. Joe’s Cafe

I love reading the write ups from my fellow local bloggers. I do it daily. So it was thanks to Philly Phoodie and Mac and Cheese that I learned about Mr. Joe’s Cafe, the classic, homestyle Italian spot in South Philly.  With its olde time furnishings I had thought this place had been around forever, but its actually just a few years old. As a disclaimer, the menu items are pretty much all over $10. But essentially with each order you are getting a 3 course meal.

Your Neighborhood Indonesian Spot: Sky Cafe for Goo Skewers and Orgy Platters

Sky Cafe is a small Indonesian restaurant in South Philly. I must really like Indonesian food, since I have loved all the Philly Indonesian restaurants I have been to so far. I like that they all have their own personalities. Hardena is the mom’s kitchen, Indonesia Restaurant is the most white person friendly, Java Colonial is the Indonesian diner, and Sky Cafe is the neighborhood spot. And at Sky, no menu item is over $8.
