Fancy Crepe Offenses: When Coulis de Chocolat Means Hershey’s Syrup

La Creperie Cafe is a classy Rittenhouse spot with an eclectic menu. Besides crepes, here you will find soups, salads, quiches, and oddly- paella.

On average the savory crepes run $12, which was a red flag for me. Crepes don’t need to cost that much, lets be real. But I was willing to give it the old college try and see if it could work out for me.

The homemade ginger juice is fabulous and will compliment probably any crepe you choose. It isn’t as zippy as my last ginger juice experience at Kilimandjaro. The minted water brought to the table was a nice touch.

As I mentioned, the under $10 options are limited, especially if I wanted one with some meat in it, and I don’t like being limited.  The Feta et lardon crepe was one of the few that met the criteria. It came with thick bacon and herbs, but more bacon would have been preferable.  The actual crepe was crispy, thin and the edges and had a refined flavor that was definitely a notch above the average truck crepe. The feta was nice, but crepes are really just better suited to contain a meltier cheese.

For dessert, I was first brought out the completely wrong choice- a blueberry one that I really didn’t want, the waiter corrected the mistake once we got his attention. Our actual dessert crepe of fresh strawberries and creme freiche ($9) was certainly delicious, but it was really only the creme freiche that made it better than any of the crepes you could get at a truck for literally half the price. And the “coulis de chocolat?”, its freakin Hershey syrup. I am not impressed by pretending to be fancier than you actually are and I certainly don’t like to be misrepresented to by a menu.

I would save La Creperie for when you are dining with a companion  who would be more impress with the cutesy setting rather than value.  The website offers a 10% off coupon, if you feel like saving a dollar.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  • Great homemade ginger juice
  • With the long list of crepes plus other items, there is a lot to choose from
  • I appreciate the quality of the crepe itself

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • Paying over $10 for a crepe is not for me
  • Don’t you dare call it Coulis de chocolat when it is Hershey’s

  • Was there anyone else there when you went? I’ve been there twice at dinner time and liked the food and setting (which is saying a lot after studying in Paris during college) but both times my companion and I were the ONLY people there. Same with whenever I walk by on weekends. Curious how it stays open.

DL best crepe in Philly: the $2 Crispelle (nutella/orange) at Paesano’s. You’ll forget all about the Hershey’s syrup incident.

  • @kristy, there were actually 2-3 tables when I was there, plus a bday party coming in as I left. But the vast majority of tables were not filled, you are right.

@hotjam, I have wondered about the crispelle, but I never have room for dessert when I am at paesano’s. Orange though? I usually don’t like orange flavor in my dessert, but I would wager the $2 to try.
