PROFILE: Philly Luncher “Claire”

As is customary at Philly Lunch, every Tuesday we turn over the site to a different lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Philadelphia. This week it’s Claire, whose quail ravioli got 3rd place at the Philly Cheese Experiment.

Name: Claire

Age: 25

Occupation: Research Coordinator and blogger forwww.downtowndwell.com

Where in Philly do you Work?: CHOP

Favorite Kind of Food:I’m a sucker for things on a menu with any of the following: beets, kale, Brussels sprouts, goat cheese, fresh mozzarella, and scallops.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: radishes, turnips, maraschino cherries

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Philly: Tyson Bee’s (33 & Spruce) has killer lemon grass chicken, and their curry of the week with tofu is cheap and always has a perfect kick to it; Magic Carpet (34 & Spruce) for great falafel or a tofu  meatball sandwich. Tacos Don Memos (38 & Sansom) has amazing tacos even though it’s a bit further of a walk – at least you can call in your order ahead! For a nicer lunch spot, Baby Blues BBQ (34 & Sansom) has a great Catfish Po’boy, made awesome with their XXX hot sauce.

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? Tyson Bee’s. It’s worth the wait! Hopefully their recent change in ownership won’t be too devastating…

Place you discovered thanks to Philly Lunch (if any) Tacos Don Memo

If you could work anywhere (just because of the lunch) where would it be and why? Somewhere in China… I traveled there in 2004 and though I’ve been to many parts of the world, the flavors in the food there are unrivaled!

Is there anything you’d like to ask the Philly Lunch readers? What’s your favorite Thai spot? I love a good, spicy red curry!

Good Thai is not easy to come by, I have enjoyed Little Thai Market and Erawan, which now has a new Chinatown location.

IMHO, there’s only two places to get good Thai in Philly – Circles & Erawan. In that order. Circles is at 1516 Tasker. Erawan is on Arch b/t 9th & 10th and another @ 23rd & Sansom.
I think Little Thai Market is totally overrated.

  • Didn’t Tyson Bee’s just shut down?

Noticed you are in West Philly. I wrote-up a Thai red curry on here a while back that I enjoyed: http://midtownlunch.com/philadelphia/2010/05/10/spicy-curry-at-thai-singha/

  • it didn’t shut down, 2 of the partners (the main dudes) left, but the other 2 should still be… truckin along

Hooray for another Philly Cheese Experiment contestant being profiled! Anyways wanted to echo Arjay on Circles…by a pretty good margin, but actually I put Cafe Du Laos as my second favorite location for Thai food in Philly (albeit it is quite a bit more expensive than Circles)

  • @peetah, I was just at Cafe de Laos. They do appetizers best I think- jerky, sausage, soups.

I forgot to mention Circles, I got delivery from them once and enjoyed it. Do you really think Laos is more expensive than Circles? I don’t know…

@arjay – I completely agree with you re Little Thai Market. I ONLY get the salmon there, and ONLY when there is little or no line. The other couple of dishes I tried there were so badly off-balance as to be almost inedible.
