Pizza Thursday Week 1: NYPD Pizza
This week I asked the forums about the best pizza places in Philly but didn’t get much of a response… so I had to take matters into my own hands. For the next few weeks, Thursday will be Pizza Thursday- a different pizza joint every week until I feel satisfied we have uncovered the most delicious pizza options. I intend to try a regular slice at each place, plus one other that strikes my fancy.
For consistency, the pizza will be assessed on the following categories:
For week 1 I went to NYPD pizza, a place I have often walked by but never went in, mostly because I didn’t love the idea of a Philly pizza place pretending to be all New Yorkish. But all of the Best of Philly awards hanging on the wall had to be justified, right?
The standard slice gets my approval. It came out of the oven burning hot. The slice was really really cheesy, which made it more filling. I am mildly obsessed with the proper coagulation between the cheese and sauce, and NYPD passed my test. A little more sauce would have been nice though. Crust was also good, there was some saggage due to the copious amount of cheese, but it held up alright and I liked that the end crust piece was thin- I hate when a wide crust takes up space that cheese and sauce could be occupying.
I also recommend the margarita slice. The simple composition works because each element stands on its own- I tasted the basil, the sweetish tomato sauce, and the buffalo mozzarella that NYPD gets from NY.
Week 1 was a success, let’s see if next week’s contender can beat NYPD.
THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)
- I like a super cheesy slice, where the sauce and cheese are appropriately mixed together
- I prefer when the crust isn’t too wide
- The margarita slice uses fresh ingredients
THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)
- Close to $6 for 2 slices isn’t the cheapest
