7 Reasons to Hate L.A. Lunching (The “Irv’s Burgers” Edition)

I try to be positive here on Midtown Lunch… and I love this city.  The food is amazing, and there’s no better place to be a “Midtown Lunch’er”.    But as much as I love most of the food in L.A. (and will defend it to the death against any outsiders, or natives with an inferiority complex) there are some things about lunching in this town that really annoy me.  Here are 7 of them, LAist style, for your enjoyment…

1. If two slices of your cheese pizza and a fountain soda costs $9 at lunchtime you are never allowed to be compared to New York pizza in a favorable way. Sorry Vito’s, but it’s time for a lunch special.

2. I’m all for the explosion of gourmet coffee shops in Los Angeles, but can we return ice coffee to where it belongs?  In a plastic cup with a lid and a straw. I shouldn’t need a funnel to add milk to my ice coffee.

But wait… there’s more.  (5 more, to be exact.)

3. If you combined the meat they use at Black Hogg’s Soppressata with the bread at Bay Cities you would have a legitimate contender for best sandwich in Los Angeles.

4. Speaking of sandwiches, if your new take out sandwiches make me think “this is pretty tasty, but I’d rather just go buy one of your pizzas and fold it in half”, that’s probably not a good thing.

5. The sandwich that’s been sitting in your window all day long should never look better than the one that comes fresh out of the kitchen, right? Right?

6. If you were to order #18 off of this lunch specials menu from a Chinese food restaurant on the westside would you expect to get a)  twice cooked slices of delicious, bacon’ish pork belly sauteed with red chilies, or b) slices of pig stomach sauteed with green peppers- which are technically a chile of a sort. If you answered “b”, here is a follow up question.  Where the hell were you when I needed you two weeks ago ordering at this restaurant!

7. In what world is an Urth Cafe style place called Beach Nation better than this? R.I.P. Irv’s Burgers.  We’ll miss you.
