7 Reasons to Hate L.A. Lunching (The “Most Controversial Thing You’ve Ever Read About Doughnuts” Edition)

I try to be positive here on Midtown Lunch… and I freakin’ love this city.  The food is amazing, and there’s no better place to be a “Midtown Lunch’er”.    But as much as I love most of the food in L.A. (and will defend it to the death against any outsiders, or natives with an inferiority complex) there are some things about lunching in this town that really annoy me.  Here are 7 of them, LAist style, for your enjoyment…

1. There is so much about this photo that gets me super excited.  Finding a gang that I would truly want to be a member of?  Check. All you can eat? Check. Under $10?  Check!  The bad news?  The “order whatever you want off the menu (minus seafood dishes) for just $9.99″ doesn’t start until 3pm.  Is it too late to get my dues back?

2. Is there some kind of electromagnetic field that exists between Downtown and Santa Monica that makes it impossible for Vietnamese restaurants to do the simplest things right. I can spot at least 5 things wrong with this bún.  Can you?  (Spoiler: it’s not the spring rolls.  They’re actually the best part about this new place…)

More haterade, plus the most controversial thing you’ve ever read about doughnuts, is after the jump…

3. I know this going to shock and possibly anger a lot of people pretty much everybody who reads it, but ruining a doughnut with a shit ton of fruit is something only a health conscious city like L.A. would champion. Is there anyone who will stand side by side with me on this one or am I on my own in crazy town? I’m not saying it tastes bad, just saying if this is the “best doughnut in L.A.” than L.A. is not as great a doughnut town as it thinks it is.  Think of it this way…  strawberry shortcake made with a glazed doughnut instead of pound cake = greatest strawberry shortcake of all time.  Amazing glazed doughnut stuffed with so many strawberries you can barely taste the doughnut = a waste of a doughnut!  If I’m driving 30-45 minutes for a doughnut I’ll take the tiger tail over this fruit stuffed monster every single time.

4. Come on SGV.  If the best dim sum places in NYC can do this, can’t we do it too?

5. I was super excited to discover Yabu in West L.A., but dammit I wish Ichimi Ann was closer. (Or maybe I just wish I lived in Torrance.)

6. If you’re one of the people who gave Tsujita Annex less than 4 stars on Yelp, know this: it’s you, not them.

7. And finally, can we just end the taco snobbery that causes people to talk shit about Tito’s.  If you can’t find it in your heart to like something about this $2.40 bundle of deliciousness, it’s possible you don’t actually have a heart.  All those people in line, every single day, can’t be wrong. (Except the people who line up outside at the windows rather than going to the much shorter line just inside the door. Those people are idiots.)

This is from a while ago and also not a huge deal anyway, but if you’re talking about the carts in #4, I think one of the reasons the best SGV dim sum doesn’t usually have carts is because cart dim sum places are considered in the Chinese culture to be less classy than menu restaurants (or so my Asian mother says). I love carts too though :c
