Midtown Lunch

If you missed Downtown Chef Josef Centeno (from the very awesome Lazy Ox Canteen) aboard the Cart For a Cause Truck last week in Santa Monica, you’ve got another shot at it today. The truck will be parked at 5900 Wilshire today from 11:30 am to 1:30pm, and it looks like he’ll once again be serving up his signature “baco” – a self proclaimed hybrid of a taco and flatbread (although we thought of it more as a Chinese bun “sandwich”, made with flatbread instead of bao.) You get one of those plus a cookie, pistachios and a drink- all for $10! And it benefits City Meals on Wheels. Still not convinced this is the place to be for lunch today? The original – super crispy chunks of delicious pork belly, served with shredded beef “carnitas” and topped with salbitxada, a Catalan salsa made with tomatoes, chilies, garlic, parsley and almonds. Kind of on the small side (especially when compared to the Animal fried chicken sandwich from last month!), but it’s for charity… and with all the other stuff they give you it’s totally worth it.

The pork belly sandwich was the obvious pick- but don’t be discouraged from ordering the healthier sounding shrimp baco… which turned out to be more like a buffalo shrimp sandwich (and equally amazing.) If I go again today, and they have the same two sandwiches, I honestly don’t know which one I’ll chose (and that’s saying a lot because pork fat always trumps shrimp in my book.)

Anyway, if you work anywhere near Mid-Wilshire, this should be your lunch today… and don’t you think you can stroll up late and still score one of these sandwiches. 5900 Wilshire isn’t the Pac Design Center.
