You’re Going To Have To Break The $10 Barrier To Get Full At Smorgas Chef

There are several restaurants in the Financial District that fall outside the $10 price range at lunch, but sometimes I’m still curious about them. One of those places is Smorgas Chef on Stone St. just off of S. William St. The Swedish meatballs on the menu kept luring me in, but even the open-face lunch sandwich is $12 and the entree version costs even more. But what about the $10 appetizer of meatballs, mashed potatoes and lingonberry? Would it be enough to satisfy at lunch?

When Smorgas Chef says appetizer, they mean appetizer. This isn’t the kind of starter you could order at a chain restaurant or Irish bar and be more than full after consuming. And I realize that many of you would have trouble paying $10 for five pork and beef meatballs atop a mound of mashed potatoes, smothered in gravy with a bit of lingonberry sauce.

That being said, these meatballs were definitely a cut above what you would find at say, IKEA. If I would have had a couple of slices of bread I would have been satisfied, but I guess that’s why most people would pay $2 more for the open -faced meatball sandwich that comes with potatoes and salad.

This was a tasty lunch, but Smorgas Chef is definitely not a place you can full at for $10 unless you’re an extremely light eater. I guess FIKA or Crepes du Nord are the only somewhat DL friendly sources of Scandinavian food in the Financial Distrcit.

Have any of you
