Fried Chicken & Waffles Come In Sandwich Form At The Real Good Truck

real good truck correct

Last Friday I had my mind all set on a nice, healthy lunch to try to purge the plates of fatty pork and street cart fare I’d eaten earlier in the week. That all went down the drain when I saw the Real Good Truck was parking in the Financial District that day, and I’d been wanting to check out their weird waffle sandwiches since the truck launched at the beginning of January. Donny ate their beefwich sandwich soon after they hit the streets and wasn’t overly impressed by the deliciousness-to-price ratio that I often find to be the downfall of the new-school trucks. Their fryer is now operational, so I headed over with the fried chicken waffle in mind.

There are both savory and sweet waffle filling options but the chicken karaage (Japanese fried chicken) sandwich ($6) called my name. To round out my carby lunch I also got some waffle fries ($4). This seems to be the combo of choice according to what I heard others ordering, but there are also two kinds of sausage you can get inside of a waffle, or a waffle grilled cheese which kind of sounds like a drunk person’s dream. Or there are the peanut butter/Nutella/marshmallow fluff options.

The fried chicken wafflewich is pretty simple – a large waffle that wasn’t overly sweet doubled over a fried white-meat chicken breast that had been chopped into chunks.

I was kind of envisioning a waffle filled with popcorn chicken pieces but instead there was a faint coating of breading on only a couple of sides of the chunks. The default sauce is spicy ranch, but I have to confess that I am a ranch dressing hater, and so I instead went with honey mustard. This was a tasty sandwich, but I kind of felt like it was missing some other ingredient.

The waffle fries were OK. It was a decent portion, but they were pretty greasy and not all that crispy. I guess it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the extra $4. I really like the idea of a waffle sandwich but hopefully they’ll add a few more items to the menu or tinker with the originals.

I’m going to wait to give them a +/- evaluation since I’ve only eaten here once. The truck seems to be parking in the FiDi on Friday’s, but make sure to check the Twitter Tracker before heading out.

Did any of you check this truck out when it was down here? Put your take on it in the comments if you did.
