ML Downtown Forums: A Kofta Sandwich Rec; Hunting For Good Sushi

Go As Carb Crazy As You Want With Salaam Bombay’s Takeout Buffet Option

We’ve all been there: You go to a by-the-pound buffet and have to hold back on the heavy items for fear of paying $20 for lunch. A couple of Indian restaurants in Tribeca offer all-you-can-eat lunch buffets, including Salaam Bombay on Greenwich St. (btw. Duane & Reade) and Taj Tribeca. But they’re also both a few dollars over the $10 mark that I try to not top unless it involves Russian spa cuisine. So when I saw that in addition to the eat-in buffet at Salaam Bombay, you could also stuff a takeaway container for $10 I smelled a challenge. Read more »

Crunchy Peanut Buttercup Waffles Anyone?: There are many tasty things on the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker today, so just ignore the dreariness outside. Waffles & Dinges has its truck on Whitehall with a couple of special waffles, and also has a cart on Greenwich. Bian Dang is on Water and Korilla BBQ is on Front St. SoHo has Sweetery, Rickshaw Dumplings and the Joyride trucks all on Hudson.

Signage Up On First NYC Potbelly Sandwich Location

The string of restaurants on Maiden Lane continues to grow, with signage up on the Potbelly Sandwich Shop going in next to Hot Clay Oven between Gold & Pearl. The store location was announced more than a month ago to some people’s delight and others’ disinterest. This is the first NYC shop for the Chicag0-based chain but their Web site is void of any mention of this location so it’s unclear when it’s opening. If any of you are fans, weigh in on what’s good at Potbelly in the comments.

Have You Bought Your 2011 Vendy Awards Ticket?: As you may have seen, tickets went on sale (and vendor nominations opened!) yesterday for the Vendy Awards taking place Sept. 24 on Governor's Island. A limited number of early bird tickets are available for $80 and proceeds go to the Street Vendor Project. I can't think of a better cause to stuff your face for.

Gigantic Kosher Food Hall Milk Street Cafe Opening Soon

A huge kosher restaurant called Milk Street Cafe announced it was moving into the old Mangia space at 40 Wall St. back in August of last year. Well it looks like it’s about to open soon, according to a sign in the window. The food hall will have a bunch of stations including breakfast, pasta, panini, salads, sushi, a grill, carvery, rotisserie, baked goods and something involving “Pacific Rim specialties.” It won’t be entirely vegetarian, with chicken and beef served alongside the seafood options. I know there’s at least one good kosher option in the FiDi with seating, but this sounds like it will be a huge boost for those who otherwise have limited falafel-heavy lunch options.

No Free Korean, But At Least We Have Big D’s!: Unfortunately it looks like that truck serving free Korean food isn't coming downtown at all, but we do have some non-free options on the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker. Korilla BBQ is on Varick and Rickshaw is on Hudson along with the Sweetery truck. Big D's is in front of 7 Hanover.
