High Hopes For Sandwich House Didn’t Pan Out

After a recent trip to Italy I’ve been thinking about all of the great food I ate there including a number of top-notch sandwiches. The problem is that most of the options near my office are more of the giant Italian-American parm variety. And I love Alidoro in SoHo but it’s not exactly convenient for those of us in the Financial District. Then I remembered Sandwich House on Ann St. (btw. Nassau & Park Row) served some Italian sandwiches that may just be what I was looking for. Daniel seemed to be impressed when he ate there a couple of years ago in search of his Rosario’s replacement so I decided to give it a shot.

There are a bunch of sandwiches to choose from filled with the usual prosciutto to the less usual pork loin with horseradish. I went with neither of these and got the bresaola with arugula, pecorino and olive oil on baguette ($9.75). There’s no toasting or pressing of your sandwich here which is kind of nice and I guess sort of authentically Italian.

I think you can see the problem with this sandwich pretty clearly and that is the explosion of arugula that happened when I unwrapped the sandwich. There was also some unadvertised tomato slices in there that weren’t good and only served to make the bread soggy. The pecorino was good but there also wasn’t a whole lot of it as you can also see from the photo.

The second half of the sandwich was a little more successful because the arugula had some olive oil on it and I already knew to remove the tomato slices before chowing down. A word of warning about the baguette is that it was almost annoyingly chewy so you might just want to go with the regular slices bread if that’s a problem. For what I paid I was also expecting a much heftier sandwich. This didn’t really fill me up and I probably have a more delicate appetite than some.

I may give Sandwich House another try for some pasta or soup sometime but it’s unlikely I’ll be going back for another sandwich.

  • Get the pork. GET THE PORK.

  • I couldn’t agree with you more on this place. I had the same sandwich (Bresaola), i actually could not even chew it. It was weird. Definately not what i think of when I want an Italian style sandwich. The sandwiches at Puffy’s come closer in comparison to what i ate in Italy. They’re more delicate, and the ingredients are of top quality.
