Happening Upon Covert Biryani and Kebab At Gyro King XPL Cart

It’s been awhile since I’ve had a good street meat lunch and it just so happened that the “Gyro King” Xpress Power Lunch cart on Whitehall St. was serving something a little different. I’d spotted a picture of kofte-type kebabs hanging on the front of the cart so I decided to check them out since it was only a $5 gamble. Well, when I got there another sign was even more exciting.

A typed sign hanging next to the kebab picture advertised four types of biryani: chicken, lamb (I’m guessing just standard XPL gyro), veggie and kebab. You know what’s even better than kebab from a cart? Kebab from a cart over biryani rice.

There were a couple of surprises with my lunch. One was that the kebab was made of beef and not lamb like I’d expected. It was good, but mostly tasted like a meatball over rice which was just kind of weird. I’d asked for hot and white sauce and while the heat wasn’t really there I really liked the white sauce because it didn’t just taste like mayo.

The only evidence of biryani in the yellow basmati rice was a couple of clove pods scattered throughout and that was about it. It’s not like it cost any more than regular rice so you can always take the chance that yours will be better than what I got.

All in all I really liked my kebab over pseudo-biryani rice from here and it’s a little something different if you get sick of gyro or chicken.
