Slate Interviews Lunch’ers in Midtown… are you in the video?

Slate interviewed lunch’ers eating at Sbarros, McDonald’s and Subway in Times Square for this video about whether or not calorie listings make a difference in what you eat for lunch. Big shock- there’s a Sbarro’s, McDonald’s, and Subway in Midtown! I had no idea.  Even more shocking, nobody seems to care that in some cases the calorie listings aren’t even accurate. (Chipotle I’m looking in your general direction.)

I think it’s a great idea. The only thing is that it’ll cause some consumers to migrate to other restaurants where they could live in blissful ignorance.

It’ll be like, “wait sbarro’s is how many calories?! Lemme go to a counterfeit Ray’s instead! Who knows how many calories is in a calzone!”

Yum.

I think it’s pretty obvious from the way that calorie counts for salsas and toppings are listed separately at Chipotle that that the numbers we complain about are intended as “base” numbers, including generally only the tortilla, rice, and protein. The finished product will have a higher calorie count depending on what else you have added to it.

Misleading? Possibly, to those not paying close attention or unable to sum up three-digit numbers.
