Flatiron Lunch: Your First Look at KalBQ
The spread of the Korean Taco has slowed a bit since last year, but that doesn’t mean I’m not psyched to hear about any new entry into the field. KalBQ, a cleverly named Korean fast food shop near Baruch opened up last month (on Lex btw. 23+24th) to offer another take on the combination.
I stopped in last month for KalBQ’s pre-opening party to see what it was all about. The menu was still in flux at the time, so I’ve been holding off on a return visit to give them a chance to settle in. That being said, I’m going to be out of town for a bit, so before I leave I wanted to at least give you all a first look at the place.
KalBQ shares a storefront with an Atomic Wings on a stretch of interesting looking places on Lexington between 23rd and 24th. It makes total sense that an area with a bunch of college kids would be the perfect place to seek out cheap food for lunch, I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner.
The space isn’t huge, but has a decent amount of seating space.
The menu starts with more traditional Korean dishes, barbecue platters, rice bowls and the like.
But it also heads into more mixed territory with kimchi tacos, quesadillas and sliders.
It’s unclear how the quality will stand up to the options available on 32nd Street, but I’m looking forward to exploring my way through the menu once I get back in town – if one of the other contributors doesn’t beat me to it first.
KalBQ, 36 Lexington Ave, between 23rd and 24th Streets.
