Cer Te’s Uncle Sammie Sandwich vs. Uncle Sammie Pizza

Cer Te (on 55th btw. 5th+6th) debuted their special July sandwich, the Uncle Sammie, but it came with a twist: you could get it as a pizza over at Pizza by Cer Te (on 56th btw. Park+Lex). The Uncle Sammie consists of pulled BBQ chicken, grilled corn, green beans, and a bacon-potato puree and since this is the first time you can get a special as a sandwich or a slice, of course we had to see which is better.

First up was the slice which, due to its nature, adds in some sauce to the special. I am a fan of mashed potatoes, bacon, and chicken on pizza, and the green beans made me feel a bit on the healthy side-in my mind they canceled out the bacon. I liked it for what it is: a unique special pizza that you can’t get anywhere else in the city. The key to this slice though is that it has to be hot for you to really enjoy it.

Whereas the slice just felt like something different, the sandwich really reminded me it was summer and time for BBQs. Maybe it’s the combination of bbq chicken and corn with a side of potatoes? True to the Cer Te nature, the sandwich is a good size and filling, the chicken is tender and juicy, and two layers of potato and bacon puree should make every person happy. But I feel that the sandwich might benefit from some sauce, a nice tomato-based BBQ sauce maybe-St. Louis style? That could tie the BBQ theme together.

The winner for me, and it a close contest, is definitely the slice, but if you can get some BBQ sauce on that sandwich, it could overcome the challenge.
