Homefront Deli is Up for Sale!

Midtown Lunch’ing favorite, the Homefront Deli is up for sale after 15 great years at 41st St. between Madison & Park.  The Epoch Times has the story, starting from Owner Wanda Kassimis’ dream of leaving her Midtown desk job, and opening a deli.  The article says that the space is up for sale, and that “after almost two decades in her current location, [Wanda] is ready to make a fresh start in a new location, but real estate is competitive in Manhattan. ‘It’s been hard to find a buyer’, she confesses.”  The article doesn’t give any indication of when it will close, where she is going to move, or what the reason is for the sale, and curiously, no mention is made of her husband (and co-owner) Jimmy, who I got the full story from this morning, while he worked the breakfast line.

Sadly, the Homefront Deli is up for sale because the couple is getting a divorce.  Like Wanda, Jimmy plans on opening up his own place somewhere in Midtown, but says it won’t happen until they find a buyer for the Homefront.  He leaves the possibility open that the new owner will keep the deli open as is, but it seems pretty unlikely.

Don’t know exactly when it will happen, but it looks like we will be losing the Homefront soon, so get in those last orders before it’s gone…

  • boooo.
that’s my fav go to place – been going there for 3 years. it’ll be hard to find something that’ll replace the quality, price and friendliness of wanda and jimmy.

  • It’s a sad day in the breakfast and lunch world. I’ve been going there for over 10 years. It’s a great deli and always delivered quality food at a reasonable price. Hopefully they both open up a place near by and carry on the Homefront tradition.

  • That just sucks! Best deli I’ve found in NY, IMHO. Just a block away from my office too, Damn!

  • Went there for the first time today after reading this, its a shame its closing its so tasty and I’m only a block away. Oh well… “Are you in the hot or cold line??”

  • Do they realize how their divorce is affecting the community?!
Do we need to start up a marriage counciling fund?

  • Good people, good food, good prices, good portions.

Zach – you changed the deli’s name to “Hometown.” Anything you’re not telling us?

  • @ddr – I always do that… fixed it.

  • I don’t know guys, I’m a “bitchin” cook, anyone up to fund my first deli?

  • ‘Bangin idea mamcita i’ll ‘fess up some spondooliks and we’ll fat face the clients all the way to the caymans.

  • I used to work across the street for 2 years and I loved going there, even though my coworkers were displaced by the initial appearance of the storefront. It’s scrappy and I liked that about the place, plus Wanda is the absolute best at what she does — service always with a smile! This is such a shame…

  • Looks like Homefront is now officially closed

  • used to be a go to place, until a big fly in my salad. it happens, but does turn you off for a bit.
