Fancy Crepe Offenses: When Coulis de Chocolat Means Hershey’s Syrup

La Creperie Cafe is a classy Rittenhouse spot with an eclectic menu. Besides crepes, here you will find soups, salads, quiches, and oddly- paella.

On average the savory crepes run $12, which was a red flag for me. Crepes don’t need to cost that much, lets be real. But I was willing to give it the old college try and see if it could work out for me.

Groupon “Now” Deals Launched in Philly, Including Lots of Lunch Deals For Us!

I heard about these immediate deals that Groupon was doing, where you get a Groupon right away that is good for that day only, but it wasn’t available in Philly yet- until now! So far, the deals aren’t the supersavers that we are used to, but you can save a few dollars. Today for example you can get $3 off Makiman or More Than Just Ice Cream. The deals are constantly updated, so here goes another thing to procrastinate with at work. Love it!

Wandering Wednesdays: Polish Cafeteria Food at Syrenka

It’s Wednesday, meaning time to explore lunches outside my guarded Center City purview. I started with New Wave Cafe, but there is another spot to get the real deal Polish food experience- Syreka.

Syrenka is one of the realest places I have lunched at; simple tables to eat at, a counter with hot food to pick from in the front, and a kitchen in the back to make all the rest.  The well-used phrases “honest, home cooking” can’t help but come to mind. If you had a Polish grandmother who loved you very much, she would make you the exact meal that I had.

Far From Home Closes Thursday, Meaning 3 Days Left To Enjoy Truck Empanadas

Yesterday on Twitter, Far From Home Cafe, the burger & empanada truck in Love Park, announced this would be their last week of serving food in Philly. With under a year of serving food to our city, the people behind the truck are moving on to book deals and consulting opportunities. They are looking for someone to buy their truck, so hopefully the empanadas will still be available. Note to whoever buys it: Keep selling empanadas or else!

I am ashamed to admit that it was news of the closing that brought me to Far From Home Cafe. Every time I pass by Love Park, the lines just seemed too long to deal with. The thought of never getting to try out their empanadas was enough to force me to wait it out.

The New Hand Drawn Noodle Shop- Yummy Lan Zhou

There is a new hand drawn noodle shop in the hood. It had been ages since I had a decent freshly made noodle and I was hopeful that the new spot would be a new favorite. It would be easy to get this shop confused with Chinatown’s other beloved hand drawn noodle shop, they are around the corner from each other, they both have steps leading up to the restaurant, and they have similar names, Nan Zhou v. Lan Zhou.  But since this one is so new, the space is really clean. Orders are taken right away, though we had to ask for drinks. In the back you can see and hear the fresh noodles being made through the process of slamming dough down on the counter to break it up into strands of noodles. There can be no question about the freshness here.
