Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.
I remember fondly the days when I used to gorge at Mad. Sq Eats. Now, at least in terms of ML appropriateness, I go in with a healthy amount of skepticism.
Can anyone remember the last time they were ever on 10th Ave for reasons not related to the Javits Center? Other than people working on Hudson Yards, in the pyramidal Associated Press building, and the folks that actually live in Midtown (I know, right? Wow, people actually live here and don’t just disappear to/from Penn Station!) there’s not much if you aren’t a taxi driver looking for tires or repair work. For those that do venture to 10th, where you can see the glory of Jersey in all its riverside splendor, you’ve got a new lunch option as you safari onwards to your eventual destination. Savory and Sweet (located at 404 10th Ave – probably why it’s so hard to find, end nerd joke) appears unassumingly on the corner of 10th and 33rd… just blocks away from the madness of Comic-Con starting today.

Last month, 30+ brave Midtown Lunch’ers gathered in Bryant Park with 32 plates of chicken and lamb over rice with white sauce and hot sauce from 16 different carts and food trucks nominated by the readers of this site. The goal? Crown the street meat champion of Midtown. Last year Uncle Gussy’s old school Greek truck took home the top honors, following in the footsteps of The Famous Halal Guys (on 53rd & 6th), Kwik meal, Kwik Gourmet, and Comme Ci Comme Ca. Previous champs were retired so that a new platter of street meat could be immortalized.
After intense weeks of calculation, here are the results…
Garment District veterans might remember Kebab & Grill, which came up as closed a little over a year ago. It’s been an empty space for rent, with a caveat: “No restaurants.” I guess the owners have changed their minds – Shanghai Broadway is open out of nowhere, in the former K&G space.

Last week, the new Mr. Nice Guy Truck, hailing from Inwood, made an appearance on the corner of 49th and 6th Avenue. The truck sells sliders for $3.50 each, or a box of three for $9 with fries included. Your options of sliders include the “Classic Nice Guy,” the “Wild Turkey Slider”, or the “Grilled Cheese Slider.” The truck also offers three different kinds of fries: classic hand-cut french fries, sweet potato fries, or yuca fries for $5, if you don’t go for the slider box.
According to DNAinfo/The Uptown Collective, Mr. Nice Guy is a new venture from the people that brought Dyckman Bar to Inwood. Anyone have a chance to try the new truck yet? Is $3.50 per slider worth it from Mr. Nice Guy? Let us know what you think in the comments.

Midtown will be welcoming a new lunch restaurant later this week, when Roti Mediterranean Grill opens on 43rd St. (btw 3rd+Lex) on Friday. Roti is a build-your-own type of place that offers “healthful” Mediterranean cuisine, including pita sandwiches, salads, and rice platters. Andrea has been to the location downtown if you’re interested in reading more. A new month means a new sandwich at Cer Te (on 55th btw. 5+6th) and October’s bad boy looks like a real mess… or messed? Not sure what coincidental slaw is, but hash on a pretzel bun sounds pretty good to us. Early adopters, let us know how it is in the comments.

You might have noticed that Ilili is missing from Mad. Sq. Eats this fall. Thankfully, this doesn’t mean that you have to spend $25 for a 2-course lunch at the restaurant up Fifth Avenue. Instead, Ilili has opened Ilili Box (subtitle: Mediterranean takeaway), a shipping container converted into a take-out window located in the Flatiron public plaza diagonally south from Mad. Sq. Eats.
Since I have seen no indication of how permanent or the time-frame for this pop-up, I made the executive decision to skip the first look and start eating.
