Midtown Lunch

Good news for all lunchers looking for authentic Neapolitan pizza in Midtown – Don Antonio is open for business (on 50th btw. 8+9th Ave.)  The new pie shop boasts some serious culinary chops, as its owned by Roberto Caporuscio, the pizzaiolo in charge of Kesté, as well as Roberto’s long-time mentor, Antonio Starita of Naples’ Pizzeria Starita. While most of the pies are well above the $10 range, almost all of the restaurant’s calzones and paninis are at the $9-10 range. Serious Eats has a drool-worthy preview of the place, and we can’t wait to check the place out ourselves for lunch. And if anyone has tried Don Antonio’s, please let us know what you think in the comments.

In honor of Valentine’s Day tomorrow, Wafels & Dinges has made a commercial for their latest special “De Bloody Valentine Wafel”.  It features blood orange chocolate, strawberries, and almonds and sells for $7 ($4 for a mini). They’ll be available at least for the next week, and beyond that until they run out of blood orange chocolate.  For me, a treat like this is more of a I’m-angry-at-being-alone-and-I’m-going-to-sit-in-the-corner-drowning-my-sorrows-in-this-waffle kind of thing… but if you prefer to take the video’s advice and give it to your sweetheart like an engagement ring, I suppose that works too.

Last month, when cheesesteak truck Phil’s Steaks tweeted that their new head chef, Josh Colon, not only hails from South Philly, but also previously worked the grill at world famous Pat’s King of Steaks, I couldn’t wait for them to serve in Midtown. Having lived in Philly, I know enough about cheesesteaks to have an opinion. I prefer Pat’s over Geno’s, but at the end of the day, Jim’s on South Street is my favorite spot. Steak-wit’-provolone is my standard order, and that’s what I got at Phil’s Steaks.

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every week, our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

It’s February and you know what that means. VD is lurking around the corner waiting to turn couples and singles alike into its candy colored prey. Scarlet Valentine hearts are splattered on storefronts and insipid bare butted cupids are riding any and all conceivable forms of advertising like a jockey on derby day. Sure, on Tuesday you could go home and hide out after work or you can take cupid by the balls and twist some fun outta a Hallmark holiday usually meant for lovers. Grab some co-workers (not literally) and enjoy a buzzed night out at these single or couples friendly events.

What does everyone do on Thursday nights? Hit up the bar. What’s the best thing to eat for lunch on Friday? Burgers. So was the thinking behind Uncle Gussy’s (51st+Park) Friday special, a bacon and Swiss burger. When I stopped by there, I was definitely in need of some burger lovin’ and picked one up. The platter comes with fries and a bit of salad, but I was interested in seeing if this could be a proper replacement Carnegie John’s burger!
