When I last ate at Oriental Express on Cedar St. (btw. William & Pearl) I went straight for the buffet rather than dealing with the crowd of people at the back counter where you get things from a steam table or order off the menu and have something cooked to order. There were some hits and misses with the buffet but it became pretty clear that if it’s junky Chinese food you want, it’s probably best to just order from the menu rather than grabbing little bits of things and worrying about how much rice you can afford to pile on. The good thing about the huge mass of people in the back is that even the food on the steam table won’t be sitting around for long.

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Cathy who is a recent transplant to the Financial District and has an unpopular opinion on street meat.
Name: Cathy
Occupation: Account executive
Where you work: Wall St. and William St.
Age: 30
Favorite kinds of food: Sushi, bistro fare, salads
Least favorite foods: Halal carts. Can’t get past the smell.
Favorite lunches downtown: I go to Pita Press on Cedar (btw. William & Pearl) and my favorite thing to get is one of their salads with the warm pita on the side. You can also get a side of tzatziki for 50 cents to dip your pita in. It is one of my favorite lunches. That is my go-to lunch spot not only due to its proximity but the tasty fresh ingredients. I also like Hot Clay Oven – the Indian take out place that is setup like Chipotle. That is pretty tasty. On the higher end, Crepes du Nord is great. The buckwheat crepes are made to order and the fillings are very healthy and yummy. I like a lighter lunch so both of these places fit the bill for me.

Wafels & Dinges In Soho: Wafels & Dinges is helping REI celebrate its grand opening today on Broadway btw. Spring & Prince, according to the ML Downtown Twitter Tracker. Elsewhere in truck land, Sweetery and Eddie's Pizza are at Hudson & King, Frites N Meats is at Hanover Sq., and Korilla is at Front & Gouverneur. Bongo Brothers is at Varick & Charlton and Schnitzel & Things is at Water & Broad.
