Wanted: Profiled Downtown Lunch’ers: Once again, we're in need of some people to share what they eat for lunch, as we like to do every Tuesday. Whether or not you think your lunches are interesting, I can guarantee there are people reading this site whose choices are worse than yours. Plus, it's Friday and I know you have some time to waste. To volunteer as a profiled Lunch'er, e-mail downtown@midtownlunch.com.

This winter hasn’t really been a nasty one, and so it is that at the beginning of March when it’s 60 degrees out, I think nothing of heading to an outdoor kiosk for lunch. Snac’Meal is next to Centre Melts on the northeast side of the 1 Centre St. building and has a hodgepodge of a menu for both breakfast and lunch that includes sandwiches, soup, falafel, shish kebab, pita pizza and curly fries. It was the “Spanish torta” sandwich that caught my attention, partly for the lunchtime price of $3.95 ($3.50 before 11 a.m.) and the fact that you could pair it with curly fries for an extra $1.50.

New Potbelly Open Right This Second: The new Potbelly Sandwich Shop location at Broadway & Reade is officially open today after two days of invite-only sandwich slinging. Look for it under a bunch of scaffolding, and since it's so nice out, maybe add one of their cheapish shakes to your lunch.

A couple of weeks in a row, I’ve noticed that the Our Heros truck at Wall & Water has been courting the Catholics with its non-meat and seafood Lenten offerings. They’ve had a fried tilapia sandwich, another with potato, egg, peppers and onions, and last week they had Manhattan clam chowder. The tilapia sandwich sounded good to me, especially since they paired it with the words “spicy remoulade.” After growing up being forced to eat the nastiness that is the McDonald’s Filet o Fish one too many Fridays, I can’t say I’ve ever really sought out fish sandwiches, but I thought this grown up, classed up version sounded much more appealing.

Bian Dang Is Back!: Since it's basically Spring outside, I say standing in line at a food truck sounds pretty good. Bian Dang is back from hiatus at Water & Coenties Slip, Wafels & Dinges is at 60 Wall, Frites N Meats and Big D's are at Hudson & King, Our Heros is at Wall & Water, Korilla's at Front & Gouverneur and Bongo Brothers is at Water & John. Sometimes we at Midtown Lunch: Downtown get offered a meal at fancy pants places with lunch outside the $10 price cap. Kutsher’s Tribeca on Franklin St. (btw. Hudson & Greenwich) which has a lovely-looking lunch menu including gems like duck schmaltz fries and a pastrami sandwich recently invited me to lunch. Instead of eating fatty meats and carbs myself, Kutsher’s has allowed me to give away a lunch for two for up to $100 to be used Monday through Friday between 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., and by May 31. If all of that sounds like something you could do, let us know in the comments why you and your guest should be the chosen ones. You have until the end of Friday to plead your case and a winner will be chosen and notified by the following Monday. Take a look at the lunch menu after the jump. Read more »
