PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Jeremy”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Jeremy who genuinely loves eating in the Financial District (no, really).

Name: Jeremy Wiland

Occupation: Corporate gift sales

Where you work: Wall St. between William and Pearl

Age: 36

Favorite kinds of food: I used to only eat hamburgers, pizza and chicken until I moved to New York City. I tried Thai food and fell in love and now I will eat anything. There isn’t a kind of food that I will not eat including Thai, Indian, Afghani, sushi, Italian, bar food, Mexican, seafood, French and tapas.

Least favorite foods: Ethiopian…I had a very bad experience at an Ethiopian place and will never try it again.

Favorite lunches downtown: I have lived in the FiDi for more than 6 years now and love everything about this area. Besides having every subway in the vicinity I still rave about the restaurants around here. Recently, my company moved down here as well so I never leave this area at all anymore for food. There are so many places but the ones I frequent the most are: Cafe Sage on John St. (at Cliff) has fantastic chicken massaman and pad see ew. Salaam Bombay on Greenwich (btw. Duane & Reade) – They claim they have the best chicken tikka masala in NYC and I might have to agree. The FiDi is also the best place in NYC for pizza and I am not talking about the pay-by-the-slice places. We have the real deal brick oven, square pizza places like Harry’s Italian on Gold (at Platt) and Adrienne’s Pizza Bar on Stone (btw. William & Pearl)- by far the best in the city. Acqua at Peck Slip (nr. Water) at the South St. Seaport has the best mozzarella cheese I have ever had. Lasagna and lobster black noodle at Barbarini Alimentari on Front St. (btw. Peck Slip & Beekman) is to die for. The tuna ravioli at Suteishi on Peck Slip (btw. Front and Water) is out of this world as is every special roll they create. The Bailey Pub & Brasserie at William and Pine has the best turkey burger I have had. The Fulton just opened up on Fulton (btw. William & Nassau) and the lobster cobb salad, sliders, burgers and sesame crusted tuna are all amazing, and I always end it with the homemade cookie sandwiches. Mad Dog & Beans on Stone St. (nr. Hanover Sq.) has amazing guac, burritos and fajitas! Earl’s Court on John St. (at Gold)  just opened up and you can get anything there. Luke’s Lobster on S. William St. (btw. Broad & William) has fantastic lobster rolls. Leo’s Bagels on Hanover Sq. (at Stone) has the best bagels in the city!

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: The Bailey Pub & Brasserie and Harry’s Italian.

Dream job location, purely for lunch purposes, and why: See above. I have worked and lived in other areas but this area has the best of everything.

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch: Downtown readers? Has anyone tried No. 1 Little House for Chinese? Chinese food is the only food that the FiDi is lacking.

I haven’t eaten at No. 1, but the best Chinese I’ve had down here is at Goodies on Fulton (at Gold). They used to be located in Chinatown so it’s a little more authentic than other places. And as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email us at downtown@midtownlunch.com.

I order from No 1 sometimes. It is good for a fix but nothing I’d rave about.

There is no good chinese in the fidi. Order from Chinatown if possible, if not just don’t eat chinese.

We’re missing a lot of options, not just Chinese.

There’s no eatable indian. Also no vietnamese, although Xe Lua will deliver from seamlessweb. No BBQ. No real deli, although again Sarge’s will deliver from way uptown. There’s only decent mexican restaurant (Toloache) and they’re expensive fancy mexican, not a cheap taqueria like we really need. There’s no really good diner in the fifi, just George’s which is at best OK.

It’s pretty dismal, working down here.

  • I like Pearl St. Diner actually And Tandoor Palace is perfectly suitable for lunch as far as Indian goes. But it is a chinese food wasteleand here.
