PROFILE: Downtown Lunch’er “Rich”

As is customary here on Midtown Lunch, every Tuesday we’ll profile a different lunch’er and get their recommendations for places to eat in Downtown NYC. This week, we have Rich who has a lot of good sandwich recommendations for the Soho/South Village area.

Name: Rich

Occupation: Software engineer

Where you work: Bleecker & Broadway

Age: 29

Favorite kinds of food: Ramen, chirashi, burgers, oysters, anything spicy or fermented (except stinky tofu).

Least favorite foods: Stinky tofu, over-cooked BBQ, anything super greasy

Favorite lunches downtown: No. 9 tuna sandwich and bee stinger smoothie at Lite Delights (a.k.a. “Juice Bar”) on E. Houston & Mott; “Matthew” proscuitto & mozzarella sandwich on semolina at Alidoro on Sullivan (btw. Spring & Prince); Tuna 1.0 or lamb sandwich at Snack on Thompson (btw. Spring & Prince); Super Heebster on an everything bagel, toasted, at Russ & Daughters on E. Houston (btw. Allen & Orchard); Calexico burrito at the Calexico Cart on Wooster (at Prince); Tofu spicy udon or beef bibimbap at Duke’s on Broadway (at Spring); Pretzel sandwich with turkey at Whole Foods on E. Houston (at Bowery).

The “go-to” lunch place you and your co-workers eat at too often: Bite on Lafayette (btw. Houston & Bleecker). It’s super convenient from the office and nothing beats waiting for a sandwich while standing outside and people watching on Lafayette. I get the turkey balsamic and mushroom spicy sandwiches too much.

Places downtown you discovered thanks to Midtown Lunch: Downtown? New to this part of the site, but when I worked in midtown, I used to follow the blog religiously since there weren’t too many options up there. You guys were a lifesaver!

Anything you’d like to ask the Midtown Lunch: Downtown readers? I go to a bunch of places and just grab food to bring back to work. Any recommendations for places to sit and have a quick, cheap, delicious lunch?

I am not super familiar with this neighborhood, but I’m going to recommend Kelley & Ping on Greene (btw. Prince & W. Houston) or Hampton Chutney Co. on Prince (btw. Crosby & Lafayette). What do you other lunchers suggest for Rich?  And as always, if you would like to be next week’s Profiled Lunch’er (or know somebody you’d like to nominate), email us at downtown@midtownlunch.com.

  • I’m gonna have to try that pretzel sandwich from Whole Foods since I just moved to right near there!

Trying to think what I know in that area…. let’s see: Two Boots, Pinche Taqueria…

A little further: Fiat Cafe, Asia Dog, Tuck Shop, Zabb Elee

I haven’t been yet, but: Tacombi, Lahore Deli (Indian that cabbies love), Macbar

    • Oh yeah, I’ve got more…

Peep has an excellent Thai lunch special.
Tribeca Taco truck is great and parks on Prince and Broadway a lot.
La Nueva Conquista for latino platters.
Hoomoos Asli for Israeli (the mallewach is amazing)

      • Thanks for the suggestions! I’ve been meaning to try out that taco truck, but the line there is always too long. Any place that serves tacos al carbon is good in my books.

Another person also suggested Tacombi, so I’ll definitely hit that place up!

      • Yeah, I have not been disappointed with any of my choices at the Tribeca Taco Truck, but they have one called the Tribeca Taco which is Carnitas and Chorizo which is delicious (add the avocado crema). The mango sauce was also delicious, I liked it on the carnitas taco.
