Midtown Snapshots: Sam’s House Cafe is Selling Your Dong

Sorry, my still-stuck-in-junior-high sense of humor couldn’t resist posting this one… this sign at Sam’s House Cafe (formerly Bagelfeller on 48th btw. 5+6th) made me laugh out loud yesterday. Is that so wrong? (Apparently this is technically not a mis-spelling either.)

Snapshots: Roast Duck, Indian, Korean & Dessert

A lot of good looking snapshots have been posted to the ML Flickr Photo Pool lately. Feel free to use them for a little lunchtime inspiration today…

Midtown Snapshots: Jamba Juice Is Not The Best Hiding Place For a Giant Banana

Fun!

I tried to get my friend to buy a shake from one of the Vietnamese fruit carts, but he wanted Jamba Juice. I can’t really mad though, because I got to see this guy. Taken inside the Jamba Juice on Broadway btw. 46+47th.

Midtown Snapshots: Sign of the Times

DSC09981

This pretty much sums up Midtown 2008 to a T. Locally owned ice cream place (Blue Pig) gets replaced by a Subway; longest lunch line in the city is for 99 Cent pizza. 43rd Street btw. Lex+3rd

Midtown Snapshots (Pop Burgers, Crepes, and Pork Skin Edition)

Haven’t done one of these in awhile… here are some of the photos that have been posted to the Midtown Lunch Flickr Pool:

Pop Burgers

Pop Burgers from Pop Burger (on 58th btw. Madison & 5th). The perfect lunch for when you’re waiting around for a lady selling Indian food on 58th and 5th who never shows up!

Mushroom and Cheese crepe from the cart on 50th btw. 6+7th (which is run by the same people who operate the crepe cart on 53rd btw. 5+6th, in front of Moma). They have a pretty decent Argentinian empanada as well. It’s not homemade or anything, but I’ve had worse snacks in Midtown.

Snapshots: For Those About to Chaat…

For people who are used to chicken tikka masala, biriyani and tandoori, ordering “chaat” (the word used to describe small plates of snacks) can be a little more confusing.  To make ordering it a little less intimidating, check out these photos The Flooz (who blogs about Astoria on Joey in Astoria) posted to the Midtown Lunch Flickr Pool, from Indus Express, the fairly new Indian steam table/kati roll place on 48th btw. 5+6th.
Somosa Chaat

The “Somosa” (sic) Chaat – Crisp turnovers, tangy chick peas, yogurt & mint chutney.  $4.95

Papri Chaat – Homemade chips, lentil dumplings, garbanzo beans, potatoes, yogurt, chutneys & spices.  $4.95

What’s that smell? (Co-worker lunches from the past few weeks)

Not surprisingly I have become the lunchtime stalker in my office.  Between Noon and 3pm, if you’re eating something and that smell is wafting between the cubicles, you can count on me to be there.  “What’s that smell?  What are you eating?  Where did you get that?”

I’m sure there is one of these people in your office too… and if you’re a regular reader of this blog- then chances are that person is you.   See something good in your office?  Send it to zach@midtownlunch.com , or post it to the Midtown Lunch Flickr Photo Page.

Here are some of the things I’ve smelled over the past few weeks…

Tilapia Fish Special from the Kwik Meal Cart (45th & 6th)

The Filet Mignon Sandwich from Starwich (on 38th btw. 5+6th).

Starwich is like the ‘wichcraft, before there was ‘wichcraft.  This particular sandwich is $12.95, making it outside Midtown Lunch price boundaries, but most of the sandwiches are under $10 (including a braised short rib sandwich on challah that looks pretty good to me).

Some street meat, and a different looking chicken parm sub after the jump… Read more »
