Sad News in K-Town as Gahm Mi Oak Shutters

Bad news for old school Koreatown fans… Eater has reported that Korea-town favorite Gahm Mi Oak has closed for good. It’s a real shame, considering the restaurant has been open for 25 years, and this would be the perfect time of year to indulge in their Sul Long Tang (milky ox-bone soup).

  • Eh. I don’t know. Maybe you have to be Korean to understand the appeal of milky ox-bone soup? I tried it once at Gahm Mi Oak and didn’t like it. It was boring and bland.

At one time this news would have left me sad, but Gahm Mi Oak had really fallen. Given the case of food poisoning I got after my last visit there, this is a good thing for the health of the city.

@Ike, it’s supposed to be medicinal. You drink it when you have a cold (or feel like there’s one coming on), or when you need a good warm up. Think of the whole broth trend that’s happening now.

    • Yeah, Stephanie, we found out about that later. If we’d known that beforehand then we probably wouldn’t have ordered it. I mostly dislike medicinal foods. Food should have flavor. But then I also get the impression that maybe their rendition wasn’t the greatest?

Did you add salt and plenty of green onions? These types of soups are a little unusual in that you are supposed to season them at the table and will be pretty flavorless if you neglect to do so.

  • I was never really down with their bone soup
