Flatiron Lunch: World’s Best Sandwich Truck Doesn’t Live Up to Name

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Last week in the cold, I went to find the World’s Best Sandwich truck which a friend around the corner said I should check out. Part of me figured that if it really was the World’s Best Sandwiches (or even one of New York’s top trucks serving sandwiches), I would have heard of it already. But it was at least worth a visit.

Big D’s New Khao Cart is Coming Soon

Big D's Grub Khao Cart

Despite the frigid winds outside, there will be a point soon where we will all want to go outside during lunch without fear of frozen toes. And Big D’s Grub will be bringing us a new cart option! Over the winter, the guys behind the truck have been working on this new venture where the meals will be based rice-based (‘khao’ means rice in Thai.) The menu will be rotating, but the starting menu should include Bangkok basil fried rice made with grass-fed sirloin or panko-crusted chicken, and a dish called “Grande Loco” which will consist of a premium blend burger served over Jasmine rice and a fried egg, with Thai country gravy.

No word yet on when the cart will open, so keep an eye on their Twitter or Facebook page.

Today is $2 Tuesday at Schnipper’s on Lex: If you've been holding off on trying out the newest Schnipper's Quality Kitchen location on Lex btw. 50+51st today is the day. A bunch of their menu is just $2, including the old fashioned burger, the cheeseburger, their chicken club, crispy sandwich, and chick filet, plus mac & joe, two salads, fries and sweet potato fries.  Each for $2, all day long Want a PBR to wash it all down?  That's $2 after 4pm.

Wasabi Sushi & Bento Serves up Fast & Casual Japanese to Midtown

Well everyone, Wasabi Sushi & Bento is finally here. After a little bit of super long wait, Wasabi has opened to the public. Last week, I had reported that they were open, only to find out that it was more of a “soft opening”. Despite reports from other Midtown Lunchers that they had given it a try, I decided to wait until yesterday for their official opening. I was a little too excited to give Wasabi a try, opting for only one bowl of Raisin Bran Crunch rather than my usual two. Armed with a ferocious appetite, I practically ran over to Wasabi Sushi & Bento to give it the official Midtown Lunch breakdown.

Flatiron Lunch: Openings and Closings

It has been a while since Flatiron Lunch recapped area openings and closings, so apologies if this is old news to you. Lets start with the bad news first…

A friend who lives at the corner of 27th and 3rd just informed me that Grass Cow closed. I thought they had quality burgers, but apparently, they were no match for Shake Shack a few blocks away.

Grass Cow Burgers and Shakes, 347 Third Avenue, btwn 25th and 26th Streets, (212) 889-0089

Kati Junction Satisifies Kati Roll Cravings Further West

Kati Junction sprung up out of nowhere, as it replaced Labeleca in their spot on 40th. Kati Roll Company has had a lock on the Kati roll game in my neighborhood, so it’s refreshing to see a new competitor pop-up in an even more convenient location. So, armed with a craving for Kati rolls, I made my way over to Kati Junction to see what they were offering.

Wasabi Sushi & Bento is OPEN! Well… Almost

Wasabi Sushi & Bento, which was originally planning to open in Spring 2013, has finally opened (almost). I walked by yesterday, and there were people walking in and out of the front door. I figured a review was necessary, so I walked towards the front door when I was greeted by an employee asking if I had an “invitation”. I didn’t, of course, but it looked like a lot of other people did. She informed me the official opening was tomorrow (today), so I took a quick peak inside and went on my way. It’s very modern and clean, with plenty of employees on hand. I’ll be sure to get there today for a full review. Wasabi Sushi & Bento is on the corner of 40th and 7th Ave. More info on Wasabi, and another picture, after the jump.

UPDATE: I was misinformed, this is merely a soft opening for “friends and family”. The official grand opening will be next Monday, February 24th. Rest assured, I will save my appetite until then.

Japanese Restaurant Week Started Yesterday: Japan Week will return March 6-8, bringing Japanese food, exhibits and performances back to Grand Central's Vanderbuilt Hall. In the meantime, Japanese Restaurant Week 2014 begins this week. Restaurants all over the city are participating, including Midtown Lunch favorites Go! Go! Curry! and Sunrise Mart. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Tokyo Station, several restaurants will create food inspired by what was popular in 1914, while others will focus on food from other Japanese regions.

Flatiron Lunch: Kati Roll has Competition From Roomali

Every Friday we go south of the ML boundaries in search of a delicious lunch. Sometimes it’s Murray Hill south or the Flatiron District, sometimes Gramercy and everything in between- but we just like to call it Flatiron Lunch.

Since learning about rumali (or roomali) rotis during my trip to India, I have been meaning to try out Roomali in Curry Hill. In case you were wondering, the name rumali roti translates to “handkerchief roti” because they are as thin as a, you guessed it,  handkerchief. Unlike naan, which is put in an clay oven, rumali rotis are tossed like pizza dough and cooked briefly on a dome heated from inside. Notably, Roomali doesn’t serve their rolls in rumali rotis. Strange, I know.

Video Break: Looking for Valentine’s Day Love at La Maison du Chocolat

We’re all looking for a little love, so for Valentine’s Day this year, I thought I’d impress a lucky girl with some luxurious hot chocolate at fancy Rockefeller Center shop La Maison du Chocolat. After taking out a personal ad looking for a date, I was excited that I got a response. The love (and chocolate) fest is all captured on video after the jump. Unfortunately, it didn’t go exactly according to plan…
