I’m Leaving At the End of Next Week… Where Should I Eat!?

At Lunch Now: Street Meat Palooza 2

So… as much as it saddens me to say, next week will be my last week of full time lunching in Midtown. It’s not really goodbye, and I will definitely be back for Street Meat Palooza, Choice Eats, the Vendy Awards, and some random lunching, but after next Friday I won’t be the full time voice of Midtown Lunch anymore. Since I announced a few weeks ago that I was moving to L.A. there have been some “sky is falling” comments and emails saying that things won’t be the same.  Not that many… but a few.  And I just want to assure those 7 concerned people that nothing is going to change on Midtown Lunch when I leave.  Not just because I’ll still be overseeing the site, and would never let that happen- but also because the site has never really been about me.  It’s always been about finding lunch.

In just under four years Midtown Lunch has grown into an enormous community of like-minded eaters, converging in one place to share news, tips, and opinions about the best hour of our lousy work day. Everything I write about on this site originates from you, whether it’s an email, a photo, a comment on a review, or a post in the forums.  Nothing comes out of thin air… everything comes from you guys. What I’m trying to say is, on Feburary 1st I’ll just be handing over the site to the people who have always run it… you guys.

Sure, there will be official (and unofficial) contributors… and they will all be names you should recognize from the comments, and Friday link round-ups. After all, somebody has to stuff their face every day for the good of the site.  But they will depend on you guys, just as I have depended on you, to let them know about new openings, closings, specials, amazing lunches, and just to generally keep them honest.  As a group they are definitely more attractive, and less fat than I am, but don’t hold it against them.

So after next week, I hope all of you will continue to contribute to this amazing community… in the comments, in the forums, and with tips and photos (which can still be sent to me at zach@midtownlunch.com, if for no other reason than to make me jealous of what I’m missing out on.)  I also hope you’ll follow my west coast lunching, through the new Los Angeles section of Midtown Lunch… which will launch shortly after I arrive in L.A.

Anyway, now that that’s out of the way, let’s get to the more important task at hand! (For me anyway.)  My final week of Midtown Lunch’ing.  I was kind of inspired by this post in the forums to do a Farewell Tour of sorts, hitting up all the Midtown Lunch spots I will miss the most in one whirlwind week. So… where should I go?  No rules… except it’s got to be under $10 (no “splurge” lunches), inside the Midtown Lunch boundaries, and no Mexican food.  As much as I love the El Rey del Sabor Cart, I’m moving to L.A.  Clearly I’m not going to miss NYC tacos where I’m going.  Also, no chains.  I love you Five Guys, but I’m guessing you’ll be in California soon enough (if you’re not already.)  So there it is.  5 lunches left.  What should they be?  Add your suggestions to the forum post>>

NYC dirty dogs from the old lady’s cart. Eat until you puke.

Hm. A ‘Whatever’ in response to a commenter and a lengthy poem.

Note to self: remove midtownlunch from blogroll….

  • Thanks for the memories and 40 pounds :) best of luck in L.A., come back a star.

  • Zach, I know you have need to stick to your Midtown roots for your last week in the city. Nevertheless, I do believe the fact that you have never been to Di Fara must be remedied, and I am willing to foot the tab for this journey! Keep it in mind :)

  • Make a list of the great food you can ONLY get in NYC vs what’s out there, then fill’er up!!!

This probably means Japanese Curry, street meats, pizza….and ummm….anything Asian that is not sushi.

That’s just for Monday…you’re on your own after that!

Thanks for the great website, food links, and good luck out west!!!

  • I agree with Harry. A follow up at a different Tad’s is a necessity for a true Midtown Lunch blogger and should be done over the weekend. I believe that was your best post ever.

After that get your favorite stuff and a one day pizza tour b/c your not getting good pizza out there.

Finally stew peas from dutchy on Thurs.

Famous Halal Guys on 6th Ave and 53rd (the daytime SE corner). I doubt there will be a lot of Halal out in L.A. and even if there is, it won’t be as good.

    Good luck.

Judging from being a longtime reader… sad to see you go. You should be able to have a pretty good “farewell tour”:

    (1) Wafels and Dinges and/or Dutchy or Schnitzel… truck of your choice
    (2) Biryani cart
    (3) Cafe Zaiya (or one of the others, but probably Zaiya) – somewhat of a “palate cleanser” for the week.
    (4) Hing Won, where (as someone noted above) it all began. Or Go-Go, in honor of following Hideki westbound.
and (5) – El Sabroso. How can you not say your final farewells in a freight elevator hallway?

Whatever you do, please keep us posted.

Unbelievably great Chinese food awaits you in Monterey Park, and nearby San Gabriel Valley locations!

  • hey Zach, if i were in the city right now, i’d pull Maddy out and add a special cone or maybe a savory sundae featuring white sauce just for you to the list!! but alas, i’m enjoying sunnier weather right now. enjoy your feast, plenty of pepto and mylanta should also be added to the order… just in case, ya know! ;)

Yes, the sky is falling!!! Ahhhh, I cannot believe you are leaving before we had a chance to dine together in NY. Even though I am all the way in SF, I still enjoy reading about the places I could be eating if I could talk a certain someone into moving to NY.

Congrats on the move to LA & I am looking forward to seeing what you start doing out there …. lunch LA style!

  • zach, make the trip to picnic garden in flushing for all you can eat Korean BBQ!!!!

  • Zach, I wish you good luck in CA. You do know that veggies and salads are very big out there. Sprouts. Cheery personalities. The whole strange ball of wax. Good luck. (you will be back in 6 months) hee.

  • What does NYC specialize in that’s not nearly as good in LA? Pizza (no Hawaiian pizza here), pastrami and an egg cream.

53rd and 6th chicken and rice!! if there’s one thing I know Cali doesn’t have (I am from Cali myself), its the halal carts, everytime people visit i take them to 53rd / 6th and they absolutely love it. Tacos – you will have, but chicken and rice, no….
