Friday is the Last Day for Certe’s Mexican Torta

DSC02324

I finally got around to trying Certe’s May entry in the Midtown Lunch Sandwich Challenge, the Mexican Torta.  “Tanman” and “Wayne” were kind of enough to send their reports earlier in the month, but in keeping with the rules of the Sandwich Challenge I should probably post something… so here it is.  Good sandwich.  Quality meat.  Love the avocado (always a sandwich bonus.)  Liked the bread, salsa and cheese.  All around a good sandwich.  I wouldn’t call it a torta though.  That’s a torta! This was more like a good steak sandwich with avocado.  Though for $8.95 it kind of lacks that wow factor that is required for me to spend this much on a sandwich- although I would definitely recommend trying it at least once. Another solid effort from Certe (on 55th btw. 5+6th).

If you’re interested in checking it out for yourself, I think Friday may be the last day.

  • i think im the only one who doesnt find this sandwich to look appealing at all…maybe if it was pressed or toasted.

  • thats one helluva bite!

  • Steak looks kinda dry. ;P Perhaps the cheese, salsa and avocado save it though.

I’m deliberating over this or the Thanksgiving Dip today.. which one do you guys recommend?

  • @sushiburger – you know I love the thanksgiving dip… but the torta is much less of a gutbomb. All depends on what you’re feeling. Plus you have to take into account that they serve the dip every thursday. Tomorrow may be the last day for this one.

But in the end, I like the dip more.

  • “in the end, I like the dip more” ?

Anal enjoyment of Sandwich Challenge entries… Zach, you are a pioneering genius – that one would have never even crossed my mind

okay.. so had the mexican torta… (definitely will try the dip next week)

Thanks for the rec.. was a good sandwich.. i couldn’t really taste the cheese (maybe there’s something wrong w/ my taste buds).. but the avocado, pico de gallo and sirloin were all tasty.. the roll was not memorable which is a big downside for me since I love bread (carbs)… but all in all.. satisfying meal…

  • I just had the sirloin torta. Meat was definitiely tasty, minus any of the overly-charred/burnt pieces. The jalapenos give it a nice kick. Sandwich was decent overall but I don’t think it was quite worth the 9.70. Good meat, salsa and avocado but the roll was almost falling apart. Haha. Oh well. It’s worth a try. I’ll go back sometime for their Thanksgiving Dip.
