Midtown Happy Hour: Free Wings (And Hot Irish Guys) at the Pig N Whistle

If you like to eat, chances are you like to drink (read: a lot of you are freakin’ lushes), so I thought maybe it was time to introduce a happy hour column to the site. Every week, our Happy Hour Correspondent “Mamacita” will post about a different bar in Midtown that fits the Midtown Lunch mentality: unhealthy food, not lame (unless it’s lame in a cool way), and most importantly… cheap.

Midtown Happy Hour: Pig N Whistle

My eternal search for the elusive free canapé happy hour led me this week to the Pig n’ Whistle on 47th Street. Opened in 1969, the Pig n’ Whistle was originally a restaurant in the Old Townhouse of President Taft on West 48th street and now it has many outposts in Manhattan. There isn’t a discounted happy hour, but beer was a sort of reasonable $6.50 for import drafts and $6 for mixed drinks. But from 6pm to 8pm they provide the free hors d’oeuvres!

On this night there was a large chafing dish filled with crispy wings in a sweet Jamaican jerk glaze (at least that’s how I can describe it). To my delight the jukebox was playing the Pogues and the bar wasn’t crowded so our group was able to all get seats. Yet the best was soon to come ladies, because then we met the handsome bartenders.

The bartenders and patrons were friendly and it’s not everyday that your Irish bar actually has Irishmen in it. Drinks were well poured and we all received a buy back by the 3rd round. There were more men than ladies at the bar, which can be good or bad given your perspective. On the food front, most bar food runs from $8 to $12 and features your basic jalapeno poppers, calamari, chicken wings, fish and chips, and shepherd’s pie. Pizzas (margherita or pepperoni & sausage) only cost $7.95. Of course, there is a full dinner menu that is over the ML $10 price tag that includes this intriguing item: Gaelic Chicken. A sautéed chicken breasts topped with an Irish whiskey mushroom cream sauce for 16.95. By the end of the night two of my girlfriends left with a hot Irish guy and the boys left drunk and full. And now for the ubiquitous ML +/-

THE +

  • Free wings for the boys and eye candy for the gals
  • Reasonable drink prices and free appetizers
  • Not overly crowded
  • Friendly regulars
  • Buy backs!

THE –

  • Sorry boys, more man meat available than lady lumps
  • A chain pub, many duplicates in the city
  • No discount happy hour, just average prices
