2008 Readers’ Poll: Best Steak (and Cheese)

It’s time for the 2nd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. Between now and the end of the year I’ll be asking all of you to decide on the best Midtown Lunches in a whole range of categories. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Whether or not you want to treat this as a “Best Philly Cheesesteak” or just a plain “Best Steak” category is up to you… but one thing is for sure, if you want a large sandwich with sliced bits of steak, topped with some kind of cheese, you’ve got a decent number of options in Midtown. And if you want just a plain steak, for under $10, well, you can have that too! Here are the nominees for Best Steak in Midtown:

Vote for your favorite, after the jump…

Japanese Carb-gasm: The Village Voice's Sarah DiGregorio has discovered the carb on carb action of the Yakisoba pan. She got hers at the East Village branch of Cafe Zaiya, but as you know they are available in Midtown at our Cafe Zaiya (on 41st btw. Mad+5th) and Cafe Zest (on 47th btw. Lex+3rd).

2008 Readers’ Poll: Best Soups

It’s time for the 2nd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. Between now and the end of the year I’ll be asking all of you to decide on the best Midtown Lunches in a whole range of categories. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

When you talk about the best soups in Midtown, ramen is definitely going to come up… but there are a few other spots worth a mention as well. Here are the nominees for best soup in Midtown:

SHOCKER: Prince Deli is Closed For Good

princedeli

You would think that in this current economic climate, a place that served decent falafel and 99 cent pizza would be thriving… but apparently that is not the case. A tipster just forwarded us this photo from the Prince Deli (on 3rd Ave. btw. 43+44th), along with this note:

Just went to get a falafel for lunch from the Prince Deli and it is closed. Newspaper over the windows and handwritten sign on the door (see attached photo). Have you heard if it is for good or just temporary? Not the nicest place but the falafel was good and cheap and it was a second 99 cent pizza place in the area. –Andrew

Phone call confirms it: gone for good. I guess its “Best Falafel” nomination came just a little too late. No word on what will be taking over the space, but if the guy who answered the phone is the owner, than the new place is going to be run by a giant dick. (He hung up on me twice after I asked what would be taking over the location.)

2008 Readers’ Poll: Best Non-Traditional Street Food (**Updated**)

It’s time for the 2nd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. Between now and the end of the year I’ll be asking all of you to decide on the best Midtown Lunches in a whole range of categories. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Nothing defines Midtown Lunch more than the street food, and while we complain about Midtown as a “wasteland” for good food- our lunchtime street food has no rival in New York City. While there are plenty of Hot Dog and street meat carts to go around, there are also a host of unique offerings. Here are the nominees for “Best Non-Traditional Street Food” in Midtown (none of these carts were nominated in any other category):

*UPDATE* Let’s try this one more time. There was a Poll Daddy glitch, so I had to reset the poll… if you voted between 1:30 and 2:40pm EST on Tuesday, please vote again. Thanks!

At Lunch Now: Boi Sandwich is Now Open on 3rd Ave

The long awaited Vietnamese take out place Boi Sandwich has finally opened on 3rd Ave btw 44+45th. Unlike its sister restaurant Boi to Go, which has some seating, the new sandwich place is take out only (and cash only for the time being.) I know a lot of you refuse to pay $7.50 for a banh mi, but it’s all we’ve got (and now one ave closer to Midtown proper!)

In addition to the banh mi, which appear to be the same as Boi to Go, they are also offering noodle bowls, rice bowls, Asian burritos (hello!), and salads ($7 to $8). It may take awhile, but I think I may
have to eat through the entire menu.

PROFILE: Midtown Lunch’er “Sal”

Every Tuesday I turn over the site to a different Midtown Lunch’er for his or her recommendations for the best lunch in Midtown. This week, it’s Sal- a TV technician by day, musician by night… looking for a decent burrito. (Aren’t we all?)

Name: Sal

Age: 24

Occupation: Live Television Technician at Media 3 LTD (and drummer for the band Quiet Loudly)

Where in Midtown do you Work?: 44th St. & 5th Ave.

Favorite Kind of Food: TexMex.. specifically Burritos. But considering my options in Midtown, I’ll usually go with Japanese.

Least Favorite Kind of Food: I try to find the good in everything, but have no patience for bad pizza in New York.

Favorite Place(s) to Eat Lunch in Midtown: Veggie Kati Rolls at The Biryani Cart (on 46th & 6th), and the Curry at Cafe Zaiya (on 41st. btw. Mad+5th).

“Go-To” Lunch Place You and Your Coworkers Eat at Too Often? We overdue our go-to places until we can’t take it anymore. First it was Goodburger (on 45th btw. 5+6th), then Moshe’s Falafel (on 46th btw. 5+6th), now we are aching for a new obsession.

2008 Readers’ Poll: Best Pizza

It’s time for the 2nd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. Between now and the end of the year I’ll be asking all of you to decide on the best Midtown Lunches in a whole range of categories. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Even with all the crazy price hikes this year, pizza is still one of the cheaper options on the Midtown Lunch landscape. And even though I don’t ever think there will be a consensus in this category… it doesn’t mean we can’t try, right? Here are the nominees for Best Pizza in Midtown.

Dainobu To Open Tomorrow?: They were hoping that yesterday would be the big day, but it is looking like tomorrow (the 24th) will be opening day for Dainobu- the latest Japanese bento/lunch/grocery store to hit the Midtown Lunch scene (on 47th btw. Lex+3rd). They "are working crazy" to get it all done.
