2008 Readers’ Poll: Best Pizza

It’s time for the 2nd Annual Midtown Lunch Readers’ Poll. Between now and the end of the year I’ll be asking all of you to decide on the best Midtown Lunches in a whole range of categories. You can only vote once per category (so choose wisely), and official results will be posted after the new year.

Even with all the crazy price hikes this year, pizza is still one of the cheaper options on the Midtown Lunch landscape. And even though I don’t ever think there will be a consensus in this category… it doesn’t mean we can’t try, right? Here are the nominees for Best Pizza in Midtown.

Vote for your favorite after the jump…

  • I’m going to Bell Napoli for the first time today, hopefully its good as it is in first place at the moment.

  • It is soooooo good… I was thinking about having it for lunch today, while I was at home last night.. it is that good .. I was craving a grandma slice…

  • Lazzara’s is terrific, but it’s not really a slice joint. You have to get delivery or have a lot of time on your hands, at least from that location. I’m giving the edge to Little Italy on 45th because it’s a true no-frills slice joint that cranks out respectable Sicilian and grandma pies and you can be in and out in a couple of minutes.

  • I just ate Naples 45 pizza for the first time and I can’t understand how this pizza is ranked so high. It was thin and chewy like 10 year old cardboard. There wasn’t much sauce at all, which means no tomato flavor. The fresh mozzarella was ok…but when the dough is horrible, and there’s no sauce….not much is left. Little Italy on 43rd and 5th destroys this place. Two Boots is also better.

I suppose if you get the post 2pm 1.75 slice and you’re starving, then it’s ok.

How is Bravo on 42nd and 5th not on the list? IMO, their fresh mozzarella varieties are on par or better than anything you’ll get anywhere in the city, period. Fairly consistent, very thin crispy crust with awesome sauce. Why they don’t keep the shelves stocked with those pies I can’t comprehend. At about $4/slice, its expensive, but it flies when they make it. Instead the shelf is packed with pie after pie of that thick crust full of numerous toppings drek.

went to bella napoli last week. as the guy was about to throw my slice into the box, i saw a cockroach skitter across the inside of the box. i shrieked like the little girl i am, and stuttered, “bug! bug! bug!” the guy was totally unfazed and turned to get another box from a different pile, and handed it to me without a word. i should have run away but i had a train to catch. i lived to tell the story, but i can’t recommend the place.
