Pure Food & Wine’s Matt Kenney Opening Free Foods NYC Today

Free Foods NYC, the brainchild of Chef Matt Kenney from Pure Food & Wine, is opening today on 45th btw. 5+6th.  They are putting the finishing touches on the place this morning, and plan on being open by Noon for lunch.  I caught a partial glimpse of the menu on the wall, and with Salads & Entrees all over $10, it looks like Midtown Lunch might be priced out of this one.  The sandwich menu was on the far wall, so I couldn’t see the prices… Either way, the place looks pretty nice and I’m sure will be a welcome addition to all the well paid Midtown’ers who are looking for a more upscale deli experience.

Any rich Midtown vegetarians or organic food enthusiasts want to be our guinea pigs?  Check it out and report back…

  • I went in a few weeks ago and got the roast chicken salad that pumpkinette described. It was delicious – the chicken was perfect and the greens were fresh and had flavor (I forget that salad greens can have flavor after eating salad bar romaine for too long!). Organic vs. non organic aside, the food is high quality and if I’m treating myself I might go back.

I have the same complaints about the cold feeling to the place and how rude the owner/manager was. On the day I was there, the cashiers were slow and the line backed up. I’m hoping that they’ll warm up once they get the staff trained and things really flowing.

So yes, the food was tasty and was really appetizing, but I won’t be a regular here.

  • I agree with all comments above: (rude employees, unwelcoming, no where to sit, overpriced, etc.) However, you have to admit it’s hard to get a quick HEALTHY bite, under $10. Either you’re sacrificing money or healthiness/quality, that said…..
The best way to go here is the soup, by far. The Vegetable Pistou is awesome as is the Lentil…So you might pay a little more than the cart up the street, but it’s far superior and really filling. You get a sourdough roll with it. Pair up a small soup, with a small container from the buffet table (roasted veggies, cous cous) and it never is more than $9. DO NOT BUY DRINKS HERE unless you like $4 iced tea.

  • On the salad bar, only a few things are labelled organic, but when I asked the server about the bacon, he said that it was. I kind of doubted it, though, because I’m not sure the guys making the food are very knowledgeable about it. Why would they specify certain things as organic and not others, if they all are organic? Doesn’t make sense.

  • that’s b/c they aren’t organic…none of there stuff is!!!

  • ITS SO SAD THAT HE HAS FAILED AGAIN.. I WANT TO CRY ABOUT POOR LITTLE MATTHEW KENNEY’S OVERPRICED, NOT ALL ORGANIC LITTLE DELI. EVERYONE HAS TRIED TO SUPPORT HIM HERE IN NYC SINCE HE WON HIS CHEF AWARD YEARS AGO BUT SOME THINGS PEOPLE PREMATURLY EJACULATE AT. IN THE END ITS VERY SAD THAT HE STARTED AN UNTRUE ORGANIC BRAND. I GUESS HE IS LIKE A CAT ON HIS 8TH OF NINE LIVES..

  • Sounds like a few jealous people who have nothing to do on their weekend. Freefoods is not only organic with some of the best food in midtown, it is packed every day, so you haters may as well go home.

  • you want gossip? just read the history on these Drama Queens.
really all a bunch of Losers that have failed again. if you ask me.
True, how many lives do you get, esp in NYC?

It seems to be a good restaurant to have lunch and enjoy wine as I usually prefer to visit Jack’s slides and Sushi restaurant for food and wine tasting in New York, but really wanted to visit this place to taste the food and new wine flavors that they are offering to their customers.
