Jin Wei aka “4 Choices with a Soup”

Chinese steam tables can be scary. But here is the thing to remember, if you hate it, you only wasted a few dollars. That and food poisoning is temporary. At Jin Wei aka “4 Choices with a Soup” you get… 4 choices from the steam table and a soup. I navigated the steamy rows of Chinese meats, carbs, and veggies and lived to tell the tale. I didn’t even hate it!

Proteins included shrimp, pork, beef and chicken. Of the numerous choices, I went with (clockwise from bottom left) eggplant, beef and potatoes, sweet and sour pork, and bok choy.  The seaweed soup was rather negligible, but I ended up finishing the briny hot liquid on behalf of my sore throat. The vegetables were great and a safe bet for any scaredy cats – the bok choy retained its snappiness and the eggplant was the sweetened mush that I like. The beef and potatoes weren’t half bad either, the meat was tender and not overly fatty or tendony. The pork had more of the generic Chinese take out corner spot vibe with the sweet gloppy sauce, but I don’t mind a few bites of that sort of thing.

So, would you brave the 4 choice steam tables?

This place isn’t half bad. Lots of choices, as you say, including fresh fish (beware – they come with head, tail and lots of little bones intact) and lots of veggie choices. You don’t have to have white rice either, you can substitute lo mein or mei fun. You can also get a can of soda (or bottle of water?) instead of the soup.

  • if you need a refill of briny hot liquid … Dial 1-800-WAYNE-A-LOT and think them briny toughts
