Eating Mr. Potato Head and His Entire Family at Coventry Deli

The Coventry Deli is located in a Center City office building. The menu is extensive and actually pretty fun. Its more than just a deli meat sandwich, though those are available too. Breakfast, salads, a pasta station, tons of sandwiches, snacks, and dessert are all available. Hot daily specials are also available. Zero in on what you are in the mood for, or be completely overwhelmed.

They were out of roast pork, so I was unable to order my first choice– the Cuban, which sounded amazing  with cheddar, prosciutto, and pickles alongside that pork. My only remedy was to order something even more excessive. The friendly lady preparing my sandwich behind the counter apologized upon seeing my super disappointed face, but fully endorsed my alternate choice.

The Beefwich comes with slices of brisket, mashed potatoes, onions, and horseradish.  Yes, that’s right, its a meat and potatoes sandwich. The roll version is $7.50, plus a dollar for the provolone I added. The mashed potatoes were smooth, and along with the horseradish, came together as a creamy spread of sorts instead of posing as just an unnecessary addition of carbs. The brisket was thinly sliced to the point of turning crumbly, which I didn’t mind. I appreciated the varied textures provided by the crispier bits of it. The overall effect of the layers and the kick from the horseradish and onion was quite good.

The sandwich comes with a side, and the potato salad tempted me from behind the counter so I chose it, not even thinking about the fact that my meal was already half potato. It ended up being a decent potato salad, nothing fancy, not overly mayo-ed.

And if that wasn’t enough of the tuber, you could just get one giant baked potato and load it with chili and cheese. It turns out looking like the volcano you made for the middle school science fair, but tastes like winter.

There has got to be something that sounds good to you at The Coventry Deli, it is just a matter of finding it in among walls of menus.
