2013 Vendy Award Recap

This past Saturday the 3rd Annual Vendy Awards were held at Penn Treaty Park right on the water. The sun was glowing, the breeze was blowing, the Brooklyn Brewery beer was flowing; it was a perfect day.

Cheesy tater tots from the Tot Truck were good, but not far enough from the traditional school lunch tot,  they did not receive any awards.

Kami put out a cold noodle with kimchee and a pork slider. Good bites.

Probably one of the longest lines was from Christos’ Falafel, you know- the really mean falafel guy on 20th and Market who doesn’t let you order, he just serves you what he wants. He put out a giant plate of hummus, chicken, rice, greens, laffa, and falafel. I loved the falafel and rice. The laffa  did not impress.

As it turns out, his falafel was bested by King of Falafel (normally at 16th and JFK) who took home the Vendy Cup. It was nice to see them win, the couple has been vending for almost 25 years and has competed in past Vendy Awards.

Mac Mart and Gozen both had truck problems causing them to miss the awards. Luckily Lil Pop Shop had enough cold desserts to go around and won the Sweet Category. Their cherry lambic pop was a perfect palate cleanser.

Taking home the People’s Choice and Tide’s “Messy yet Tasty” Award, The Cow and the Curd knows how to please a crowd.

And from other trucks, Poi Dog had some awesome pork belly tacos. Chewy’s had a nice chicken wing and waffle dish. I kept coming back for Sugar Philly’s alcohol themed macarons.

Congrats to the winners and really all the vendors who put out great food for us to enjoy! See you there next year!
