Totally Cheesing at Abner’s

Every once in a while I have a meal without thinking about writing about it. Such was the case when I ordered a cheesy snack at Abner’s after catching a film at the International House. I didn’t think I would find anything even a little special there. Thank goodness I snapped a “just in case” picture.

I allowed myself to satiate my ever present cheese craving with the cheesiest option on the menu- a calzone. I can’t remember the last time I had a calzone; I am guessing I was a child and calorie was not a word I knew intimately. All of Abner’s calzones are filled with ricotta and mozzarella  I picked the spinach version. What came out of the oven was obscenely huge (that’s what she said, (do people still say that?)) for the $8 price.  It could be enough for 2 people. I vaguely remember calzones of my childhood dipping grease, and I  was glad that was not what I was served. The dough was baked nicely and filled with the excessive cheese I was looking for. The spinach, wilted just enough, was a good Popeye approved addition. The side of waffle fries a shared was also a good version of the snack.

According to their website, Abner’s has been around for 20 years. I have to assume based on the traffic inside that Abner’s is a favorite quick bite spot of the local college students and other neighbors. It certainly does the job at fulfilling the cravings that only an American style  pizzeria/sandwich shop can handle.

I think maybe Andrew Dice Clay (showing my age?) still says things like that, but I don’t really know for sure.

Huh. I haven’t had a calzone in ages, myself, nor have I seen anybody eating one in quite a while either. Somebody out there must be, though.

I could probably go for an eggplant calzone sometime this year, now that I think of it…
