Healthy Israeli Sandwiches from Hummus in University City

For a relatively quick, healthy, and cheap lunch in University City, Hummus is a decent option. You can choose from sandwiches, salads, and platters ranging from $6 to $13 dollars.

Order your meal at the counter and choose your sides or sandwich fillings.

The lamb kabob sandwich ($8.95) was said to come with skewered lamb pieces seasoned with spices and truffle oil. I didn’t pick up on any truffle oil, but the heavy Middle Eastern seasoning was appreciated. The lamb was tender and charred, but there were some fatty pieces that were not enjoyable. Hummus needs to cut costs somewhere, and they probably aren’t purchasing the highest quality lamb. For an extra dollar, I added fried eggplant, which although served cold, were a nice addition of texture and taste.

The falafel in the falafel sandwich had good flavor and crisp on the outside, but were not quite moist enough inside. This is no Mama’s but is definitely better than the falafel balls at Maoz.

The wide range of customizable sandwiches and the healthy yet tasty thing they have going on, Hummus may suit your purpose if you find yourself in the mood for chickpea puree topped chickpea balls in University City.

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • Some fatty pieces in the lamb
  • Falafel not as good as Mama’s

Just checked their menu… sabich! Always good to have another option for my favorite sandwich. One of these Sundays, I’m just gonna have to do a sabich crawl down that way. I know Mama’s has one, along with these guys and Falafel Bar on Chestnut. Need to make a list. Judah Grill way up there in Bustleton has one, too.

  • Thats why I got the extra eggplant- best of both worlds!
