Cheese Covered Chorizo, Bacon, & Mushrooms from Plaza Garibaldi

There are a ton of Mexican restaurants around Washington Ave, it is hard to choose where to go. When I took my bike for a repair I got into a conversation with the repair guy who told me he was from Mexico and that his favorite local place for authentic food was Plaza Garibaldi. That was a good enough reason for me to check it out.

Gratis chips come with a green and a red salsa.

The tortillas in my sopes tasted fresh. Though the portion of steak was generous,  I wished the steak was more tender. Sopes are $8.50 for 3, and come with beans, lettuce, sour cream, and cheese. I would probably recommend trying one of the pork options for your choice of meat.

I felt pretty guilty getting the “queso fundido Garibaldi” ($7). Because even a Spanish name can’t hide the fact that I ordered spicy sausage, mushrooms, and bacon covered in cheese. It was one of those days where a completely unhealthy plate was in order. Again, Plaza Garibaldi did not scrimp on meat. There was a ton of chopped chorizo, bits of smoky bacon, and a handful of mushrooms for good measure.  What more could I want? They use good quality chorizo; I didn’t have to pick out any gristle. The dish came with flour tortillas to scoop up the cheesy meat.

Jarritos are available to wash it all down, of course. But smoothies are only $2.50 and the platano is delicious and not too sweet.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  • I enjoy cheese topped meat
  • Inexpensive, fresh smoothies

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • Steak could be more moist
