Cheap Crêpes Come to Center City at Crepesody

Today,  Luncher John does French with Crepesody.

Several years ago, I went to Paris and had my first taste of a crêpe from a street vendor not too far from the Eiffel Tower. Immediately, I was hooked. It was great and cheap street food at its finest. There were crêpes with Nutella spread and others with more savory fillings.

Good crêpes here are a little harder to find, particularly at a cheaper price point. Last year, Crepesody opened up in Center City on JFK Boulevard as the most recent Philadelphia crêperie. It offers up eight savory and eight sweet crêpes on the menu for breakfast and lunch. And the verdict? Crepesody hits the spot and adds a great crêpes option in Center City.

For lunch, I started off with the Crêpe Hawaii ($5.95). Like other “Hawaiian” dishes, such as Hawaiian pizza, this crêpe comes with melted cheddar cheese with honey roasted ham and pineapples. The portion is pretty big, and there’s plenty of ham within it. And the nice touch of small pineapple pieces in the crêpe adds a nice fruity balance to the ham and cheese.

Of course, even if you have a nice savory crêpe, sometimes, you have to finish off your lunch by having a sweet crêpe as well. One of many available options is the strawberry cheesecake crêpe ($5.95). Fresh strawberries alongside a New York cheesecake piece with whipped cream make up the inside of the crêpe. You also have your choice of syrup, such as chocolate or caramel, to top the crêpe along with powdered sugar. The crêpe is definitely excellent and tastes as good it looks. It’s clearly made with care. Even the crêpe pancake is relatively high quality. The pancake is thin bur retains its substance and does not fall apart easily.

Eating the crêpes at Crepesody helps bring back great memories of my trips to Europe. They’re solid and not super expensive crêpes. Overall, I prefer the sweet crêpes, but the savory ones easily make up a good lunch.
