Order the Taiwanese Meatball From Empress Garden, But Eat With Your Eyes Closed

Empress Garden is one of my favorite spots in Chinatown. The pork chops in particular are a dish I always recommend to people looking for suggestions in that area of the city. A few months ago the restaurant was slightly renovated, making it more inviting, and the menu changed a bit. Luckily my favorites are still available.  One new dish is called a meatball dumpling or Taiwanese meatball.

This is really unusual, and unlike any other meatball or  dumpling. For $3.50 you get a ball made with a rice flour outer layer stuffed with mushrooms and pork. This is definitely one of the least attractive plates I have had to photograph. It’s appearance offends my camera. Especially when I added the sweet tomato sauce and cut it open.

Sorry, this is horrible looking. It honestly looks like something you would surgically remove from a horse. But both the taste and the texture makes up for the appearance by far. The savory pork and mushroom mixture is extremely delicious. You just have to trust me on this one.
