Bowls of Bacon and Unauthentically Great Cheesesteaks at Milkboy

My lunch at Fuel on Monday left me in desperate need of some calories. Pretty much any one of the menu items at Milkboy, the 3 month old coffee shop/bar/ music venue/restaurant, has as many calories as the entire menu at Fuel.  I deserved it.

I expected the “bacon bowl” to actually be a woven bowl of bacon. I guess I am on the internet looking at bacon too much? Instead it was actually a bowl with bacon in it. The honey glaze and the blue cheese dressing elevated it from being an otherwise boring appetizer since the bacon itself was not thick cut or anything you couldn’t make for yourself in the morning. Clearly, I loved each bite. It’s bacon. But, I can’t help but think back to my recent lunch at Vernalicous and of how much more special their bacon is.

Jalapeno cheese fries oddly came with a few giant rounds of jalapenos, so that made no sense. At least the fries were crisp and there was a decent amount of cheese.

Ok Mikey, this may not be a real cheesesteak, but I enjoyed Milkboy’s mornay sauce covered, open face sour dough version ($9). The toasted bread held up the decadent sauce and mounds of beef. A side of those steak fries made this a deceivingly filling plate.

The blue cheese patty melt was cooked medium rare as requested and the blue cheese crumbles added that extra indulgence that you would never find at Fuel. You only live once, some heavy calories now and then are a good thing.

THE + (What somebody who likes this place would say)

  • Coffee or mixed drinks (or both) in one place
  • Decadent sandwiches under $10

THE – (What somebody who doesn’t like this place would say)

  • Giant pieces of jalapenos plopped on fries does not a jalapeno fry make
